HRV and Winter Snow Storms (Wheel Vibrations)

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced very unpleasant 'vibrations' while driving after a snowfall. I realised that the space around my tires easily get filled with snow; the space is very limited between my tires and the car fender. I live in Quebec, and it seems as though every time we experience above 20 cm of snow, a lot of snow accumulated and the tires experience heavy friction, causing the entire vehicle to vibrate on the highway, at above 50 km/h speeds.

Is this a default in the HRV or should we just keep clearing that section of the tires each time?

Thanks a lot

What tires are you running? I haven't had this issue with my Michelin x-ice 3's, but I read in another thread that some have this issue on stock wheels (unless I don't remember right)

I've never had this issue, but it's been a mild winter in Wisconsin

You probably have snow/ice stuck on one or more of your rims and unbalanced the wheel(s). It only vibrates at high speed and gets worst the faster the car moves?

Clean them off should fix the issue.

Agree. Our Forester has same issue. Once the car/tires heats up, the problem with ice/snow goes away.

Is the snow/ice stuck in your wheel wells, or on your rims ?

Never had the problem with my winter alloy rims, and X-Ice minus sized, I"m in Northern Ontario.
May be an advantage to get more open style alloy rims, that are less likely to hold snow/ice.

This was brought up last month. I've had over 10 different cars and I do agree that HRV is the one that I have noticed this problem with the most. But when there is that much snow around, I am not going 50mph so it doesn't cause a huge issue. And the problem is immediately resolved once the snow/ice is removed.

As other have noted, if you do get dedicated snow winter tires. The problem seems to not be as bad.

I have very old rims, the tires are GoodYear, but my rims have big gaps that allow snow to get in easily, I guess that's part of the issue.

I had the same problem on other cars so I tried putting on steelies for the winter. Thought the small holes would keep more snow out. Turned out to make it worse and much more difficult to get the snow off from inside the rims. Put the winter rims Ddemetra recommended on my HRV and haven't had much problem at all. Plus the large openings make it easier to remove the snow.

I've been running on Honda installed 16" steel rims (the ones you see on base CRV's) and Michelin X-ice 3's for 2 winters and have not experienced vibration at slow or high speeds in snow. Perhaps the Honda steel rims play a role here.

But Doctor, it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside...
