Bottom line, you do the update you get a warranty extension on the CVT to 7 yrs, 150,000 miles, if you don't, you don't.

Hey guys,
I bought my car (2018 EX-L FWD) in December and per the Carfax it has seen the dealer exactly twice:
One at 15k miles for it's initial maintenance in 2019.
This December when I bought it to have the transmission fluid changed at 50k miles. (No updates/other service done, just empty and fill)

I had asked the dealer then about all the hubbub I've seen on here, reddit, and the NHTSA website about this issue and they said there were no outstanding recalls for my VIN.

I've since been worrying my butt off about if my transmission has received this update and is wearing faster because of it. I just called them again today and provided the actual notice # and they said again this doesn't apply to my vehicle.

Am I being silly worrying about this? Should I accept the fact that my CVT is NOT effected whatsoever and that I do NOT receive the 7yr/150k mile CVT warranty extension? If anyone knows if there were only certain production runs that were effected I'd appreciate it! I want to sleep well at night again.

Edit: On hold with Honda's main customer service line to double-check, will report back if anyone else has this question!
Edit2: Got back to me, stated no recalls open for my VIN, the same thing as the dealer. Got the explanation that not all cars are made in the same place and won't have the same issue. Not sure how many plants in Mexico make the HR-V, or how many different CVTs/CVT software they use per model but I've heard there's nothing from both the dealer and Honda global so I will see what happens and cross my fingers that not everyone was affected.

Thanks

Mine is a 2018 AWD made in Mexico and was involved in the software update, it's not a recall. There was a recall for the fuel pump(which they replaced) and brakes. Maybe the FWD's are not effected. Also, It may have been already done and Carfax didn't pick it up. Things do get missed. The records at Honda would show it though, I would think.

You can put in your vin and check for recalls here...Honda HRV Recalls there are 3.
The PDF's of the check, update procedures and warranty are attached.

Yep no open recalls show up there. They didn't have any history of it either. I guess not all VINs are affected. Been getting a ton of rubber banding while driving so was kind of hoping there was a magical software fix! Oh well, I will just keep getting my tranny fluid changed regularly and wash my hands of it.

Hopefully you won't have an issue. If you ever do I would push Honda to cover it since there are apparently aware of failures. Sometimes they post these warranty extensions, not due to likely failures, but to boost customer confidence in there product. CVT's have gotten bad press from past failures in early, mostly Nissan cars. Subaru has also offered an extended Trans warranty on their CVT's
The CVT trans Recall/TSB is pretty clear. ALL HRV's from 2016 to 2020.

If Honda US Corporate, your Honda dealer and the Honda Recall website says all the Recalls and TSB's have been completed for your 2018 HRV, that tells me that they are completed and you are fine. :)

Nothing was ever "completed" for it, they say it doesn't apply to my Vin, and the car hasn't seen a dealer since 2019, a full 2 years before the service bulletin went out. I have exhausted my options for trying to get this work done so there's not much I can do but wait and see.
So will not show up when entering your vin
I gave them the exact service bulletin #'s that I was referencing and let them know it wasn't called a recall and they still said no work was required for my VIN and the only extended warranty for my car was the start/stop switch.
Go to another dealer if available.

Same deal here. My 2018 hrv fwd never had the bulletins completed. I went to the dealer with the a21046 and 047 paperwork and also called Honda corporate, they told me my car is not eligible for the software update. I've never received a letter from Honda and i bought the car brand new and my address has never changed. So I don't think the TSB covers "all" HRV's

That makes me feel marginally better? I'd really like to know what happened between 2017 and 2019 that is an exception. Same factory, parts, but not affected.

I think they mentioned something along the lines of 'reprogramming due to higher fluid pressures' - so yes it could be the same factory parts, just reprogramming the whens and hows and how muches happening within the CVT while operating.
Hi All,

Took my 2016 in with 61k miles and it failed the test. According the Honda rep I should get me in to replacement over the next couple weeks. I did have a question. Is the new transmission the same as the previous transmission (with a clear design flaw)? If it is the same transmission, does that mean the warranty is extended for another 7 years on the transmission?

The replacement transmissions are not new - they are remanufactured and have a different part number than the transmissions that failed.

It is more likely than not that the remanufactured transmissions include revisions to address this failures.

If it is the same transmission, does that mean the warranty is extended for another 7 years on the transmission?
No - any part that is replaced under warranty is warranted for the remainder of the warranty or warranty extension. The warranty does not start over. If you have your HR-V's transmission replaced at 7 years or 150,000 miles and it fails the next day, that's on you.

Technically....
Depending on the parts, you may still have a 12-36 month warranty on the items replaced. Your mileage will vary based on dealership policy and location.

No.

New parts that a customer pays for have a 1 year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

Remanufactured parts that a customer pays for have a 3 year or 36,000-mile warranty.

New or remanufactured parts that Honda pays for are warranted only for the remainder of the original or extended warranty period.

See page 32 of the Warranty Booklet.

Update, Got a call back from the Honda dealership and they are requesting that they do a strainer test on the transmission fluid because the magnet test can give false positives. Has anyone else had that happen?

Sounds like Honda Corporate are purposely unclear on this CVT issue, to their benefit, and our detriment.

Yep. I went ahead and opened a case with Honda Corporate. I want clarity on what an acceptable amount of metal shavings in my transmission since there are already significant shavings as it failed the magnet test. The stories on this board of the scenarios where these transmissions failed while traveling at highway and losing complete power to the car have me concerned for my families safety knowing there is already a bunch of shavings in fluid.
