2019 HRV Loose Gas Cap leads to Check Engine Light, P! Symbol Light, Flashing Red "PARK" Light

During the last week, I had a loose gas cap message on my milage heads up display. I unscrewed it and re-tightened it. Then last evening, I went to start my car. Three dash board lights came on when driving: The amber check engine light; an amber (P)! symbol, a red PARK word that flashed when I was moving, but turned off once I stopped moving (at a traffic light as an example). So, I filled up my gas tank back to 100% and re-tightened it once again. I am hoping that it will go away after 30 miles of driving.

I took my HRV to AutoZone to get a free code reading report:
  • P0456 - EVAP SYSTEM VERY SMALL LEAK
  • 86-21 - Faulty seat support OPDS sensor
  • 61-11 - VSA Modulator-control unit power source circuit (IG) low voltage
The dealership said they would charge me 150 dollars to run their own code report or I could drive it around for a few days to see if it goes away.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Check the gas cap and filler to assure that there isn't any damage to the mating surfaces. P0456

But the other codes MIGHT be a result of a weak battery, or a poor connection. If you can turn the clamps without loosening, you need battery terminal shims.

If the battery is original, have it LOAD TESTED.

The battery should have been replaced by the dealer last year. I checked my online records and it says in April 2021.
"TESTED BATTERY; FAILED THE TEST WITH A DEAD BATTERY CELL. REPLACED THE BATTERY. "

I dont drive a lot each day, maybe 10 miles on average. So, I'm hoping that the Check Engine light will clear itself soon.

If not, I guess I can look at the battery myself.
If the battery was already replaced, try to twist the battery terminals without loosening.

If you can turn them, you found poor connections. Invest in Battery Terminal Shims. (cheap)

Often, replacement batteries have smaller terminals than the OEMs, and require the shims.

PS: Check the battery electrolyte, too.
The problem fixed itself. I assume after cleaning the gas cap and opening on the gas tank, then waiting for the HRV to be driven enough miles, it noticed everything was back to normal.

It is unbelievable what a loose gas cap can do!
Just out of curiosity, and as I'm not a cat, I should be okay asking this; what constitutes a loose gas cap?

Whenever I finish filling up I prefer to have the "gas" cap 'handle' horizontal, this could involve turning it 1 to a dozen clicks, if not more. I've never had any issues with it, or any dashboard warnings.

Or is it a case of owners not tightening it after refuelling?
A bad seal or cap wasn't tightened. The ECU can detect internal pressure in the tank. If no pressure, warning light.

It is also possible that the sealing edge of the filler was damaged.

Visual inspection...

Temperature and barometric changes can tripper a gas cap alert. Don't worry about it the first time.

As with the CVT issues experienced by some owners of this forum, loose fuel cap issues appears to only affect NA market vehicles. I cannot find anyone on the UK forum highlighting this issue either with Mexican (2015-2019) or Japanese built (2019/20-2022) HR-V's.
I can confirm that I also turn my gas cap until it clicks for at least 3 times... so whatever made it "loose" was not because of something that I did, as far as I know anyway.

I guess that means we need to start posting the state that we live in so people can track that and our weather now as well. o_O

If it is not a user error, tightening the cap would not have solved the problem :)

I guess I could be forgetful but... I always click my gas cap 3 times though. I had that problem on my 2002 CRV as well before it got totaled by someone who hit me (RIP that wonderful car). I was told my gas cap needed to be replaced or cleaned. So, tightening the gas cap is in my mind like I have OCD. I click 3 times or more. If I dont think I did it enough, I click it more. I definetly dont want to see a loose gas cap problem coming back again on a different vehicle.

I saw someone claim that it happens to them when they use non-name brand gas. 🤷‍♂️
Plus the person who posted in this thread that said "Temperature and barometric changes can tripper a gas cap alert. "

I have the same problem. What did you do to clear the codes? Thanks
