Okay I read the article. The 71mpg is on a Diesel engine. Fair enough.

However, it goes on to say that their petrol engine runs on 52 mpg.

Not to mention the NON-hybrid petrol Japanese Vezel ran on 48 mpg.

Meanwhile here in the states, the best we can do is 28/31/35 mpg.

Does big oil have that much of their hand in this or is there another reason we cannot get that kind of European and Japanese gas mileage?

That's 71 miles per imperial gallon (UK)
That would be 59 mpg US, but we don't get the 1.6L diesel

And the gas engine is the new earth dreams 1.5, not the old 1.8 North America is getting.

And with diesel still quite a bit cheaper then petrol over here, it's the obvious choice if you do around 20 to 25.000 km (13 to 16000 miles) a year.
