is this normal? i keep my lights on auto all the time. in the midst of driving back to work on lunch, it got dark out and started raining. of course the auto lights came on but then i noticed that all of my dash got a lot dimmer including the radio display. once i got into the parking lot, i played around with my lights... when i put it in the off mode, the dash is very bright, but then i put it to auto and it gets dimmer again. i hardly drive at night as we take my husband’s car.

You may find this video of interest, although it is a CR-V, it is the same procedure as my UK HR-V. This knob also adjusts the brightness of the steering wheel controls, the e-brake button beside the cupholders, the mirror and window controls on the doors;

You can also reduce the brightness of the Head Unit display independently of the dash by pressing the Sun/Moon button on the display:
