Faint noise at low rpms

Hi guys, hope you're doing great.

I wanted to know if anyone here has experienced a very faint "knocking" or clattering sound at low rpms (right about 1000 rpms) when very slowly accelerating from a stop, especially on an incline road. When you reach 1500 rpms or you get some speed the noise is gone. You hear it only when there's no other sound around and only happens in Drive or Reverse under load at slow speed when the engine has warmed up (doesn't happen at cold, neither in parking). Also I've noticed it can be a little bit louder with the AC ON, replicating the same conditions above. You can hear the noise here (it really isn't that loud but my phone amplified it pretty well.

Honda HRV 2020 EX Model, 1.8L engine works great, tranny too. Only 7000 miles on the 2020 HRV. I haven't noticed any performance issues, when changing oil theres no metallic residues or anything. I only use premium 95 octane fuel (oem spark plugs, 0w20 honda full synthetic oil, original tranny fluid...)

I've read some other posts about a low knock that owners with new HRVs also hear.

So I'm hoping if anyone has this same sound it's maybe a design flaw or something, giving that HRVs are not the quietest car on the market.

So any feedback would help, just to have some peace of mind haha.

Thank you!

No sound at all on my 21 awd sport.
Thanks for the reply, is yours the 1.5 or 1.8L version? The noise is very faint, can only be heard with no music and in a quiet place.

Yeah I get a faint knock when I accelerate from a complete stop.
Your one sounds loud
It really isn't that loud. My phone amplified the noise a lot, but it can only be heard with radio off and no other noise around.

Once you rev the engine above 1500 rpm the noise isn't really noticeable.

At least I'm not the only one that has heard it.

Hi HRVRS,

I just have a question, is you could help me that would be great!

Does the faint knocking sound you hear on your HRV happen at the same conditions mentioned above, low rpms under load? And is the noise similar to the youtube video I uploaded, only quieter?

Here's a link to a video of another member of the HRV forum who has the same noise just to double check.

Thank you, also if you could someday record the noise and somewhat share it to me that would be awesome!

Hey man, Sorry I can't help you there. Your one sounds mechanical. I realised the single knock from my car was just the passenger seat belt hitting the plastic when I hit the accelerator.

You might want to get that checked. Doesn't sound too good.

Is your car still under warranty? It should be if its a 2020 model.

Does the dash shake/vibrate at all? Where is the sound coming from exactly?
Is it only when you're at a complete stop? Or when you accelerate?

No it's not under warranty since it's imported.

No noise at the dash, it seems to be coming from the engine bay. Happens when accelerating at low rpms after the engine is warm.

The hrv had a rear end crash, front and suspension were untouched. (picture attached)

I'll take to a mechanic hoping it's not rod knock since the engine it's supposed to be healthy.

Thanks.

Given the damage that was done in the crash, I'm unsurprised that the car is on the road again with an abnormal noise or two.

Hi Dammit 😂, everything was replaced with new oem parts and the noise is up front where there was no damage, so it must be really unlucky or just me being paranoid.

No noises at the rear, even the strut wasn't damaged at all. Just the side panel, door, trunk and rear headlight.

Anyways, have taken it to 2 different mechanics who have said they can't find knocking on their scanners and that the noise is a very faint one to be a concern. Just wondering if it was normal on HRV when driving really slow without music, since another member has it and his HRV hasn't been on a crash.

Have a good one and thanks for all the replies.

You have several "engine noise" threads open. 2020 HRV, 1.8L, CVT. 7000miles, no warranty.

With all your threads, I can barely hear or see any issues with your engine.
If the engine is running fine, no CEL's, what's the concern?
The HRV 1.8L engine is dead reliable and simple. I would worry more about the CVT trans than the engine!

Any chance you can go to a local Honda or used car dealer and listen to another HRV 1.8L to compare to yours?

If there is something else going on or to alleviate your engine concerns:

  • pull the sparkplugs and examine them closely.
  • run a compression test on the engine.
  • oil pressure check with an oil pressure gauge connected.

You mentioned that you set the valve lash in another thread.

As was mentioned in your "crankshaft pulley wobble thread", pull the serpentine belt and see if the engine noise changes.

Hi CalgaryHRV,

Actually the engine runs absolutely fine, CVT also, no CEL's.

  • Sparks have been replaced with new oem ones, they're ok. Also recently changed honda 0w20 oil.
  • Compression test was done on the engine, also turned out all good, can't remember if it was 160 por 180 psi but all pistons were fine.
  • Will do the oil pressure check.
  • Will check the engine without serpentine belt for noise and check if crankshaft pulley has a wobble or just an optical illusion.

Also good point, I'll try to finde someone I know with a HRV or at the dealership to test for the same noise. I also tried my brother's CRV (not same engine I know) but it had a similar noise when power braking at 1100-1200 rpm.

Thank you for the reply! Have a great day!

My 2021 base model has the same sound. Started at about 15,000 miles after 2nd oil change.

Mine still keeps doing the noise, I'm at almost 11k miles right now... no performance issues, I think it really is a characteristic of this engine and probably most people don't hear it because they're always with the radio ON and driving >1500 rpm (the way it should be haha 😂)... only noticeable after warm up, radio OFF, quiet place and low rpm range. (Found about it a lot of forums of this noise also, not only on HRVs (so far heard of at lest 10 other people having it) but also on brand new Ridgelines, Pilots, Civics, Odysseys...)

Did you recently changed the type of oil? I've always used Honda 0w20 oil. You should also check the oil level just to be sure it's not lacking or above the max.

TBH brings me more peace of mind knowing I'm not the only one with the noise 😅
