Installing APK Files From USB.

Hi Guys,

I'm from Netherlands Europe and I'm happy that I'm one of the first people in my country that drives the Honda HR-V EL 2WD version.

Now I have a problem when I wanted to install multiple APP's from my USB. The install box became grey? I've checked the box in the settings security menu called "Unknown sources".

Is there a way to install apps throughout developer mode? And how to get in the menu? I saw a thread that said you need to press and hold the "power, brightness, and touch menu" button. After that hold the menu button again for 7 seconds. Does this work? I did not try it yet.

Yours sincerely,

Installing apps off an usb device

Up :)
To the best of my knowledge, this isn't possible. See this topic from last year: Android multimedia issues.

Any news for this topic ? I tried to install waze several times both via wifi and usb but always failed.

Thanks
1. On your PC, download the "PERMISSIONS 1.1 S_Mike" app from http://www.cmdroid.com/, put it on a USB stick
2. Factory-reset your head unit and connect it to a wifi network. Ensure Allow installation from untrusted sources is ticked on in Android settings.
3. Install Application from USB stick.
4. Launch the newly added Permissions app and add a new process permission as follows:

Process name: com.waze
Package name: com.waze
Select Third Party, Navi, SoundInterupt, Last
others leave blank

(you can get a list of the correct values for each app from the http://www.cmdroid.com/ Permissions tutorial PDF. hovering mouse over an app will show you the correct process and package name as well)

7. On your PC download the Waze app to your USB stick. Choose the older Waze version as the newer one doesn't really work properly. Not sure why they even have it there. Anyway it will overwrite the Permissions app on your USB stick as it must have the same file name (HondaAppCenter_A1.apk).

8. On head unit, again Install Application from USB stick.

It looks like after recent update from honda (over the air, not at dealership), the trick with renaming apks to HondaAppCenter_A1.apk and installing those doesn't work - application not installed message from android. Had to reset the head unit to factory defaults and avoid installing the updates it picked up to be able to install apks using this trick.
Now, who can tell me what happens if i install them honda updates after i installed the apks? Will the permissions app still work? Has anyone tried that?

By the way, no need to fiddle with USB sticks. Just connect the head unit to wifi, navigate to cmdroid.com, download the apk you need and install it from downloads. You will need to delete the download after you installed it and before downloading another one as android will rename the new download if file with same name exists.

First of all, there's nothing worthwile in the Honda app package. Why would you want to update any of it?

Anyway, it looks like you've already installed an update in the Honda app centre. But you can still get custom apps installs working again - you just need to change the "Allowed Installations" using Honda Permissions app as follows:

- change HondaAppCenter_A1.apk "Sig digest sha256" back to PREINSTALL (it will have a random string written there by the update so you need to put PREINSTALL back).

- you also need to re-enter the "Process Permissions" for your custom apps as these will also have been removed by the update

Hope this helps! :)
Thank you for the tip! No, I haven't open honda app center after i reset the head unit to factory defaults and currently it has two or three updates notifications if i open android taskbar. I believe it will only install those if i get into the appcenter, not before that.

Yes and and no. Yes - the 3 apps i can see there are a definition of useless. No - it looks like the updates app center picks up, contain things like bluetooth stack update (after i removed those by resetting the unit, BT phone calls became a nightmare quality wise).

I mean you said you installed an update before your issues with APKs started, that's why I was wondering why you'd want to do something like that. I know you then did a factory reset.

But what you're saying is interesting. If there truly is a BT stack update (how do you figure this? my BT call quality has been shitty ever since I bought the car! I hear others fine but I am cutting out for them all the time) then I might be tempted to update the Center once more (yes I've already gone through this by mistake and had to google myself how to re-do the APKs. :) ).
Purely from experience, no official info re what's in them updates - i don't make many calls in general and even less when i'm driving.
However, i do remember when all the updates where installed (before i accepted the challenge to install apks), i received a couple of calls and noted good voice quality (not sure how others heard me). Then i reset the head unit to factory defaults thus removing the updates and received couple of calls after that. Without the updates present, voice quality was very close to how evil mad robots in sci-fi horror movies talk. To certain extent that was even funny, unless it was an important call.
The interesting thing here is that i found the recording of the call i took while driving during which i heard real bad quality audio from the car speakers. If i listen to that on my PC - the quality is good!
My issue us different - I can hear others perfectly fine, but my voice sometimes tends to cut out for split seconds, making me unintelligible - I know because people tell me. Doesn't happen always, which is even more baffling.

in settings you have an option to connect to wifi. at least it's there on my Irish 2017 HR-V ES. at work now, so can't say exactly which option, but the picture via the following link shows "wifi networks list" option - try that one.

This wifi thing not available on Canadian models? I don't recall seeing this setting on mine.

I believe all north American models use the same head unit, which unfortunately doesn't run android

I don't get what apps people wanting to install. I can connect Samsung S6 Edge and S7 to my HRV EX through bluetooth and make and receive calls and text messages. Sygic Navigation also works through USB.

I don't recall seeing wifi option in my unit but I'll check later. Can anyone fill me in on what wifi does?
Finally, got time to fiddle with them updates the system picked up. Backed up the permissions settings in the permissions app and installed all the updates honda app center found (two or three of those). Even though the custom apps kept working fine after I restored their permissions using the permissions app, applying the updates seems to be a mistake.
Ever since the updates were installed the system can't use wifi properly to connect to internet. Reset the system to factory defaults two times - same. It connects to my mobile wifi hotspot no problem. Browser on the head unit (chrome and builtin one) just hangs and times out on any page. AHA app can't connect to its login servers. App center can't launch saying checking for updates... and after some time "Activation has failed".

Any ideas?
Thanks for the heads up! I knew installing ANY Honda updates was a bad idea all along.
I installed updates and nothing like this happened. Waze & Spotify & WiFi works fine.
