My car wouldnt start this morning. Got it towed to the dealership so they can replace the start button. They had previously replace the battery but it didnt fix the issue.

If your warranty is expired I would just buy the manual and try to fix it myself.

Here's my timeline how it started.
Smart Entry System Indicator came on and off -> Key fob batteries replaced -> Car battery replaced -> Car wouldnt start -> Replaced Start Button.
Did you fixed it?

I bought an expensive comm-link cable that the dealership uses to allow Honda's technician software to run, diagnose and recalibrate/reset the HRV's system components. I can confirm that they will not be able to find the error causing the average commonality among the HRVs that have this issue. The technicians will not do a real diagnostic sweep. After running all checks in depth from my computer while linked into my vehicle, I found that it would be to their time-management vs profitability disadvantage to even committ to such a task. They should do it regardless, but- this experience gave me perspective about what I'm more likely to get for my money if I ask a Honda dealership to run a (full diagnosis/recalibration check). The answer is a basic 5 minute check at most. Tops. Don't let me discourage you, but also try not to get your hopes up with the dealership and their warranty. They're only able to guess what the issue is, their software will not pin point this specific issue.

I've been having this issue for the past few months. I changed my battery in my fob, changed by car battery last month, and am still having this issue. I sometimes can get it to start easier by holding the fob close to the start button. The dashboard icon about low battery in the fob is on, and will actually intermittently go off every once in awhile. I called my dealership today finally to have them look at it, and prepared myself for the ugly bill I'd have to pay. They notified me that there's actually an extended warranty for specifically this issue. (I have the 2016 HR-V). If the diagnostics show the code associated with the known problem, they'll fix it for free! Might be worth getting a hold of your dealership on this one.

2016 HRV 70,000 plus miles.
I had the "repeated push" problem with the START button plus the KEY idiot light coming on nearly every startup. Occasionally a DOOR OPEN light would join the parade. The starting problem went from occasional to often requiring multiple pushes. New fob batteries did not help.

Do look at the videos of how to dismantle the switch and clean the internal contacts. I did so and since doing the job, which was relatively simple and quick, the problems vanished.

I just got a notice in the mail stating that the warranty for the start button has been extended.
My wife's HRV has started on the first time every time, but it has had the keyless start error light on for the last few years.
The warranty states that the start switch will only be replaced if the car does not start on the first press. Am I reading that wrong?

No sir you're not. I got a similar letter. Honda will not take responsibility for anything. Even if it appears like they take a little responsibility for something, they will do anything legally possible to avoid fixing our problems that they're responsible for.

I own a 2016 HR-V EX. Doors respond to the remote fine. Three months ago, (with my foot on the brake) I noticed that the push button start did not turn the car on after a single push. Usually worked on the 2nd or 3rd try.

After a week of that, I disconnected the battery. Car started after a single press of the button. Eventually went back to the initial problem. I repeated this to see if I got the same result and sure enough, same phenomenon.

Three months down, it progressed to not even turning on after a repeated push (+5 or more) of the start button while the key was in my pocket. So I had to put the key up to the button and still press the button a few times.

There is a video of a guy who replaced his keyless access remote module on his Accord.

If this is the solution, the control unit is 300. (PN 38329-T7W-A02, used to be -A01) Afraid what the dealer will charge to install and reprogram if this in fact is the Issue. Anyone else have an issue like this? Wondering if there any other fixes like a fuse replacement that resolved the issue?

I'm beyond warranty at this point at 60K+.

Thanks for your input (in advance).

I had the same issue with my 2016 Honda HRV EXL 2WD. Dash key light came on. Replaced batteries in key fobs. Light still on. One day in feb 2021 car alarm went off and daughter had to leave class to stop alarm. Following sunday alarm went off again. I told her to unlock the car and leave it unlocked. I drove to where the car was and tried to start the HRV. Would not start and dash gauges started by themself without me pressing the button. Had to jump start HRV with my trusty 2002 GMC Envoy. Got car home and next day replaced car battery with a new Honda battery. Two weeks later notice brake light were on the HRV and wipers moving as we approached the HRV. Made appointment with Honda in Cincy on March 17th 2021. They replaced the start stop bottom as they said that was the issue. Key light on dash was now off. Next day March 18th noticed headlights and brake lights came on again without me in the car. Decided to lock car and waited for headlights to go off as usually. Instead lights dimmed and car alarm went off. Key fobs were 100ft away in a tin can. Unlocked HRV to stop alarm. Tried to start HRV and dead battery. Made appointment on Friday March 19th 2021 after jump starting HRV had about 10 dash lights stay on. They went off when shifted from drive to N the back to drive except power steering light. Honda ran diagnostic and said it was the keyless access control module. Part 38329-T7W-A02. $673.00 plus labor. Call Honda today to complain. Will replace part on March 26 2021. This better fix the issue and will the wait for Honda to respond.

Yes problem solved. I complained to Honda America and also involved the dealership. I paid for one hour of labor and diagnostic. Which was about $150.00. Then ordered the module. The module was $680.00. I found the list price of the module online for about $420.00 and then found it at Honda parts direct web site. Had the work done for $680 on the part and a week later the dealship manager called me back to let me know they worked with Honda and they sent me a check for about $410 to cover 70% of cost. This was in late March 2021 and we have not had a problem since. My belief is the start button does nothing but complete the circuit to the module. The module in my opinion should have a recall also. Very happy with Honda now.

Also when module is replaced your key FOBs need to be reprogrammed to match new module code.

So I think I'm done with this 17 hrv. I have been on these forums for several years with my 16 and 17. The 16 I gave to my daughter and it has been reliable, which pleases me. I have had a 98 CRV and an 11 CRV as well, which were also reliable. Just about everything complained about on this forum I have experienced with the 17. I had the rear struts and shocks replaced TWICE. I had the transmission and rear differential eat themselves at 31000 miles. Now today I had the keyless start button replaced. Oh, ma'am, you are lucky! It's covered under the extended warranty we just enacted. Uh huh. Because the car is such a lemon we have to keep replacing it part by part. I am not interested in reading about more problems I should be looking for. 👎👎

Makes sense and sorry you’re going through it. I’m hoping to avoid some of that with my 2016 however, my orange key fob light has now been steadily on for months. Love this forum though. Getting ready to do brake pads, differential fluid, and transmission fluid. Wish me luck!
