Loud Clicking Noise When Gear Is In Parking Mode
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a brand new HR-V and it was all fine and dandy until I noticed a creaking sound coming from the rear in the evening after I drove the car home. The following part is going to be a background story of how the clicking happened so it might be a bit unrelated but bear with me.
Background
I rang the dealership the next day and got the car to be looked at and they told me they know how to fix it. To my surprise it had to stay in the dealership for 2 days - yep, I don't know why they needed it that long when they told me it's not even a mechanical issue.
Start of Issue
Long story short, I picked up the car when they told me it's fixed and the initial issue is indeed gone. However, I immediately noticed that when the engine is running with the gear in P, I will hear loud clicking noise every time I press or release the brake. The same happens when I shift it from P to R or vice versa. The sound doesn't affect any other gears nor does it come up when driving - only when in P.
I'm 100% sure there's no other noise as the initial creaking noise would have triggered me to pay attention to other noises. Here's a link to the video of me replicating the issue:
I had a chat with the Service Manager and he said it's normal it's the brake shift lock mechanism. He then showed me a brand new HRV in the dealership making the same but very subtle clicking to the point that I need to pay attention to it whereas mine is loud as your joint popping noise.

Yes, I did search through the internet and lo and behold that it's not just me. Lots of people say it's normal. I then talked to a few friends of mine who own HRV and they couldn't replicate the issue on their vehicle. A friend even sent me a video and nothing at all, no clicking noise whatsoever when the brake is engaged in P or when the gear is shifted from P to R or vice versa.
The Ask
Since this is a brand new vehicle and the things I found online mostly say, "it's been like that since the start, you just didn't realise", it wasn't like this since the start. I've been a musician for more than 20 years and I will not miss this noise as I also did a test drive when picking up this car.
Is there a way to fix this issue? I'm not sure if the dealership is just lazy as this would annoy people and when selling the vehicle later down the track, people will surely ask what it is

I have a 2019 HR-V, and I can testify that mine has absolutely no clicking sound as you describe. I hear nothing but the normal sound of an engine running.
I recommend you take it to a different dealership and inquire with them on the matter. BTW, as a musician, I completely understand your position. We absolutely notice all sounds, especially if they interfere with the music we're trying to listen too.

If a service advisor hears it in your car and says it's normal, have them pull one off the lot and see if it does it.

Yeah it's pretty weird that the brake makes clicking noise only when in P mode. I did ask the service manager where I bought my car from about this and he immediately knew what it is as he said I wasn't the first to ask. He asked me to come with him and we got into a brand new HR-V in the showroom of the dealership and yes it does make the same noise but a little bit quieter.I had comments, but not after that video. A friend of mine has a 2015 or 2016 Honda Jazz (I think they call it Honda Fit elsewhere) and it does make the same noise and he said it's normal in Honda cars. Not sure how true that is but that seems to be the trend that people are talking about.
For those interested, I emailed Honda Australia and got a reply and the dealership immediately rang me the next day asking if they can check it. I guess a little nudge to the head company never hurts especially if you just bought it from them.

Hi! What ended up happening? Because I'm having the same issue now.. I brought my car (2020) to a dealership for a rattling sound around the dashboard. Fixed. Only to have it returned with that clicking sound! Service advisor called a mechanic and said it was normal and also might be because of the temperature change (canada). Problem is i'm 100% SURE I didn't hear that sound before I dropped off my car.Yeah it's pretty weird that the brake makes clicking noise only when in P mode. The click is normal. It's the shift interlock solenoid in the CVT shifter assembly.
When you press the brake pedal, the shifter solenoid is activated to unlock the CVT shifter handle.
You are not able move the shifter out of park without pressing the brake.
Going by that video, it is much louder than our CVT HRV shifter though.
In our HRV, if you have the radio on, you will not hear that clicking.

apologies for the late reply. Yeah mine still does that and it's pretty normal for newer Honda cars (auto transmission). Some said temperature changes affect the solenoid. It's a hit and miss between loud and subtle clicking. I was also 100% sure I didn't hear it but then the mechanic showed me a brand new car in the dealership that did the same thing and my friend's Honda Jazz (I think they call it Honda Fit in Canada/USA).Hi! So yeah. Not saying I don't trust my hearing anymore (or yours for that matter), but the transmission is still working fine so I guess it's alright. It can also be that once you've driven it long enough, the sound will become more apparent as the components vibrate and whatnot on the road
