My daughter has a 2019 HRV which has generally been a good, reliable vehicle but lately the Low Tire Pressure Light comes on and stays on, no matter if tires are at proper pressure or not.

Anyone else experience this issue and is it something related to a sensor? The dealer fixed it once but it has since started happening again.

Honda uses an indirect methodology to detect and illuminate the TPMS, (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), warning. Honda uses the anti-lock brake system compares the wheel speed of each wheel and if one tire is significantly low on air pressure, more than 25% lower than recommended by the manufacturer recomendation, it will roll slower than the other three tires. When that occurs it illuminates the TPMS warning light on the dashboard. I don’t know if the car has a problem with the ani-lock brake system that detects a wheel skidding and releasing the brakes when the wheels are not skidding.

Depending upon what is meant by "rolling slower"..........

An underinflated tire will have a smaller rolling radius, and will therefore be at a higher rpm than the properly inflated tires.

Or, in the language of physics, the underinflated tire will have a higher angular velocity, with proper units being radians per second.

@TexMex01 , I would suggest checking the tire pressure with a reliable gauge. The pressure must be set to the PSI posted on driver side B-pillar. On my 2017 HRV the pressures are - fronts: 32PSI, rears-30PSI. Honda's indirect TPMS system is programmed with these values. As Flyboybob said, the system constantly checks for delta in tire rotations. The computer also adjusts the internal values based on temperature. If the tires are over/underfilled, the checks are thrown out of balance and turn on the TPMS light. Also if a heavy load is put in the car (like luggage), it might turn the light on. If the tires are worn unevenly, that could throw the TMPS light as well. Shops routinely overfill the tires becasue, I believe, their filler nozzle is preset to a certain PSI - 35/36PSI. No shop has time to do fill-check-fill on each tire.

Hi TexMex01, I Have a HRV 2020,I had TPMS System Problem,Had The Dealer Look At It Twice,Could Not Find What Was Wrong, Turns Out The Side Wall Of The Tyres Had all Perished, No body Had Noticed It..Have A Real Close Look At The Condition Of The Side Wall,Also Check The Date Code On Tyres, It Turned Out My Tyres Where Dated At 2018? On A 2020 Model?? So As We Drove Along And The Tyres Got Warm Air Was Leaking From Tyres Side Walls And TPMS Warning Light Came On..We Have Had To Replaced All 4 Tyres, No More TPMS Problems..Hope This May Help..
