LX vs. EX Decision

I am a Civic owner for many years...'91 LX sedan, '98 EX coupe and currently '14 EX sedan. Just got the '14 back in September. At the time was thinking of making the jump to an AWD vehicle for various reasons. Wasn't aware of the HRV coming out at the time...So here we are...May be making the big switch.

Trying to weigh the pros of the LX vs. the EX. The biggest reason I always ignored the LX was lack of real rims aka just hubcaps. The HRV has the same type of rims on all of the trims. Nothing special, but nice solid ones in my opinion. So this could have me leaning towards the LX.

Having driven the '14 Civic EX for a few months, I know I will be giving up the following by going for an HRV LX vs. an EX model:

Push button start (not a huge deal to me)
Smart entry (not a huge deal to me)
Touchscreen (like it, but won't be a dealbreaker)
Lane assist (really like this feature, will miss it)
Sunroof (not a huge deal to me)

Is there anything else I am missing between the LX and EX? There are a few smaller items, like the actual buttons for the temp controls vs. the 'touch' only for the HRV EX and up...But my current Civic EX has the knobs, etc and this wouldn't be a dealbreaker to me. I also know the EX and up has an extra USB port and actually has an HDMI port, but neither will be a dealbreaker either.

Anything else I am missing? That $2k+ package for the EX isn't enticing me as much seeing as my biggest caveat, the rims, has been addressed.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

That's what I am leaning...After having the Civic EX with some "bells and whistles" I can't go to an LX I don't think.

Unfortunately I just bought a Civic a few months ago and the dealer so far has not given me a good enough price to trade it back in...So for now, I am staying put.

I dunno, personally for me, I thought all the amenities of the EX were WELL worth the difference in price.

LX does have a touch screen but it's 5" and not 7". Not the deal breaker. I do not like knobs when I can have touch for the climate control though, which is also AUTO Climate Control. I didn't realize how great this was until I got my Odyssey a few years ago, but oh boy, I don't ever wanna not have this again.

That Honda LaneWatch is really great for a number of things including parallel parking aid. Something to consider, especially since you're saying this is really the feature that you'd miss if you didn't have it. I really like it and find I'm liking it more and more as I use it!

Re: Moonroof - I could do without, honestly.

Heated Seats and mirrors: this is really kind of big for me. Again, didn't realize what an amazing comfort this is until I had it in my Ody.

smart Entry and PTS (Push to Start) is ... amazing, this is an amenity I wasn't sure I'd really like, but oh LAWDY, I will never buy a car without these again.

Tried out an AWD LX tonight. Biggest thing for me - I FIT!!! My head scraped the ceiling in the EX with moonroof. Bummer is, you don't get all the bells and whistles. I knew about the downgrade in radio & climate/heated seats & lane watch... but here were a few other things I miss:

- the 5" radio isn't touch at all - only operated via dials, no Pandora - just bluetooth aux audio input from your phone (won't display artist/cover art, etc.)
- no turn signal indicators on the side mirrors
- no fog lights
- no paddle shifters (completely dependent on the CVT) - but it has a "L" low setting and "S" sport mode? Not sure what the "S" mode does without the paddle shifters
- no option to add roof rails - I guess the mounting groove on top isn't on the LX - only EX & EX-L
- no keyless entry.

I'm really torn.... I didn't fit in the EX, but have plenty of head room in the LX - and the one I tried tonight is in Black (my color of choice) and gorgeous. No other LX's anywhere around where I live.

Some of the extras I don't need... but the thought of paying for a new car and not being able to get all the options seems like a let down. But I just plain don't fit in the EX because of the stupid moonroof which absolutely don't need or want.

I'm going LX, as I prefer something more simple. I drove an EX-L Navi, didn't care for the touchscreen stuff especially on the climate control. Wasn't a fan of the pushbutton start either. The only thing I might miss from my Jeep is the fog lights, but I don't use them often enough for them to be a deal breaker.

Sorry for the slight thread jack here as well as being uninformed on this matter.

As an American resident, can I go buy a brand new Canadian car and import it to the U.S.?

Extra speeds on the intermittent wipers, and all of the other things everyone else has mentioned. My girlfriend just bought a white LX and I already love it. We test drove the EX-L and I'd go LX. Manual for me but she chose the CVT but if it was my purchase I'd still go LX manual vs EX. I actually like the simpler HVAC setup of the traditional 3 knobs, the chromeless trim (especially on the "controversial" 3 vent passenger row) and the radio is something I will always go to the aftermarket for anyway. Same could be said for heated seats. You gain a foot or two in cu ft without the AWD, which I don't need. Push button start, lane watch, etc.........I just couldn't justify the price difference from LX to EX. $20,795 and she was out of the door for $18 with her trade in. It really is a great looking car/CUV, all of the good RDX and ZDX dna without the too long profile and curb weight.

I've had friends do the opposite, importing US cars into Canada. Generally, there are lots of legislative hoops, some required mods to the cars to meet Canadian regs, and of course several levels of government bureaucracy to deal with and taxes and duties etc. It's not usually considered cost-effective except for collector, luxury or rare cars, and the rarer the car, especially if there's no similar Canadian model, the more hoops. There are some good web sites on the process, and brokers / shippers to help people negotiate the complexities. For a price, of course.

I have no idea what the opposite situation is, but I would guess it's doable, difficult, and costly. Oh, and I know Honda dealers in the US aren't allowed to sell to Canadians; not sure is the opposite holds true.

Edit: Wow, I should have refreshed before posting... way better answers already posted above.

EX is the way to go. If you're a costco member, they have the lowest sticker rate from what I was quote. EX is top of the line in my opinion. EX L is cool, but it's a semi-top of the line luxary haha. You still have manual seat adjustments and stuff. What is the cost of LX otd? EX i'm getting is lowest price in my area from what I understand. But this is without dealer addons like wheels locks and stuff. I can buy and install myself without labor costs haha. Also, if you have a USAA, they have posted the lowest price paid before taxes nationally. check it out if you have it. I used both to make my offer.

Sweet! I wasn't sure.
What kind of things can you 'not' do...which someone with an iPhone could? Anything you wish you could do with an Android that an iPhone? Is it just that certain apps work on an iPhone that will not on an Android?

I'm not sure. I don't need any kind of navigation, so I haven't messed with any of that. I hate talking on the phone, so I haven't really tried any of the voice commands, but I did import my contacts and set up some speed dials. I have easily answered incoming calls.

It pairs easily to Pandora and Bluetooth to access the music on my phone.

I feel stupid talking to my phone, so I do not use any of the voice commands, so I can't comment on if any of that technology transfers over.

I really do love the EX model. I initially didn't care much for a moon roof, but boy I'm so happy the EX came with it as a standard feature! I love the engine start button. I haven't tried the heated seats option as it is too hot here in northern California, but I am sure it will come in handy during winter. I agree the blue tooth pairing is awesome. Good luck!

Got the EX last night - Mulberry Metallic. I love it. I drove the LX.. Honestly with out the standard paddle shifters.. you'll hate turning on freeways/highways. I was down shifting like crazy on turns and getting ahead of slower trailer trucks when making turns on my way home from the dealer. It is AMAZING. You have to try it out yourself!

Put the vehicle in Drive mode. Go out on the freeway or highway and see how much power you can get when you paddle shift down (Car will automatically detect the gear for you and return to D after 3 seconds unless tapped twice). For 2k More, with all the Tech savy items in the car, I just love it. Ended up being a sucker getting the wrap for protection but I think that I would rather be safe then sorry if I broke the Paddle shifter or electronics in the future. There are 4+ computers on the dang car... oh dear if one broke... you'd be a real sucker not to get the coverage!

Agree, for just a little more, EX seems like a far better value than the LX which explains why the EX trim levels are the most popular of Hondas:
