Oil change schedule and independent shops?

I the UK we change oil & filter at 12,000 miles. It doesn't cause any problems with synthetic oil. If you dealer says 7

It's routinely 12,000 miles in the UK, I've never understood why oil changes are needed twice as often in the USA?
