Rear Differential Fluid (AWD)

99433 Views 90 Replies 40 Participants Last post by  koo1it.tb
I went in to get a wind noise issue fixed and discovered the differential fluid from the factory is a break-in fluid. It needs to be replaced after the first 15K miles and then every 30K miles. This is why I missed not having a listed maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and have to rely on the Maintenance Minder.

I just bought my HRV at 55K miles and replaced the rear differential fluid. The old fluid was really dark, like used motor oil, compared to the new genuine Honda fluid that was reddish. I don't think previous owner changed. Can anyone tell me if that is what the color should be?

well new it should look like what you just put in - I would swear that my used fluid was a very very dark almost purple sheen to it - but almost black too. That seems to be an indicator of used fluids.
Like used motor oil is probably exactly what you think- not changed in 55K miles ( or even only once !). I would look for metal savings on the magnet or in the old fluid if any.
I just ordered a couple quarts of Honda Dual Pump Fluid II for my 2018 HRV Ex and received Acura all wheel drive fluid dpsf instead.
part number seems to be the same and per some research seems to be interchangeable.

That said thought I would run by the collective of RV owners

What do you folks think?

Regards
Nick

Update: I was contacted by the dealership and they mentioned that 08200-9007A It is the same as the 08200-9007
I should be good to go.
Maybe it would help someone else as well :)

I asked my Honda service tech about replacing the washers and he stated they don't but they were cheap enough and will change at the same time. Toque spec 31-33 lbs. Canada states every 2 years but I will wait until I get the B16 notice.

follow the maint minders
I would go by mileage over any time period - 2 years could be 12,000 miles or 40,000 !
I use this vehicle as a spare vehicle to go golfing etc. My 2 yrs reading is 10,000 km or just over 6200 miles. That is why I am waiting for the B-6 alert.

keep an eye out- I do not think it pops up by itself, or stand alone - it pops up with the "next oil change" reminder. People on this forum tend to say they missed it or it never showed up. I never saw mine I just go by milage after reading this forum.

You were right, I checked in Jan then the last of Feb and March and I just had my "A16" popup (vehicle scheduled for a service next week so I checked it again). along with "1" (rotate tires) 3 years after the in-service date. I purchased the fluid and washers over a year ago. The fluid will be changed next week along with the snow's taken off. I guess the mechanic at Costco forgot to reset the oil change reminder. I and it changed at the 1-year interval back in February.

80$ Eighty dollars... isn't that the charge for hoisting it up into the air? The rest of the job, plus the oil, is done totally for free you know...
