"Spontaneous shattering" always has an underlying cause. Seeing as it was the rear window, could be that you got a small rock that was kicked up onto the glass somewhere along your travels. It caused a minor defect in the glass. You don't say where you live, but if it was cold where you were driving, as the car heated up, or maybe you applied your rear defroster, you heated it enough that the defect caused the glass to break. Call your insurance company instead of a lawyer. Not everything is someone else's fault.

I have owned Honda HRV EX-L 2023 model for last 5 months now. 2 weeks ago it was parked outside and I remote started it ( we were standing next ti the car) and suddenly boom, rear windshield of the car was shattered and I stood there surprised finding difficult to believe what just happened, glad there was no one inside the car or driving the car otherwise things could have turned bad. I complained about this to Honda and after weeks of interrogation and reviews they said they can’t fix it and I should reach out to my insurance. I wonder if windshield of parked car shattering without impact is not a defect what would be.

it is a defect. You can spend time and try to fight them. If the deductible is not too high, I would just let the insurance cover it.
Thanks for the advice! Do you think I should take legal route if they don’t respond adequately? I am going to talk to my insurance and make sure that this doesn’t increase my insurance premium. Moreover, no one in the area seems to have a rear windshield available for 2023 HRV and my local dealership says they don’t have it and they can’t commit when it will be available.

My daughter never drives on the highway and only a few miles down the road at 30-40mph max. Her car is a few months old. The back windshield View attachment 35444
shattered while sitting in a security monitored parking lot on a mild day. Security checked the cameras for the entire day and there was no vandalism or any known cause. Honda has been unable to replace the glass so far (it has been nearly three weeks without a car), and they have no time frame that they will receive the glass to replace it. Both the dealership and American Honda refuse to offer a loaner car to help us out while they figure out how to get the glass replacement. I am pretty disappointed in this experience. I have owned many Hondas in the last 30 years and was about to buy another new Honda for my other daughter. I will give that a second thought now.

I get your anger and I get your point. But this is an isolated incident sort of what legal people called act of god. You can’t plan for this. And you can’t defend against it.

I get it. It sucks, it sucks a lot. But people have this happen and then they google forum and they end up making 1 or 2 threads to vent their anger and then they move on. No company would purposely use crappy windshields for this to be a ticking time bomb. They didn’t cheap out on parts or try to run something past you. The legal and compliance ramifications of that would be awful. In fact, Honda doesn’t make its own windshield. It’s outside from a vendor.

Again, I get it. It sucks.

Honda sold roughly 700k+ HRV of the previous generation. There were probably maybe 3 members that came on here with that problem from the last generations.

The failure rate would be like .000004%

Obviously, no honest car company would "use crappy windshields". Why bring that up, Pearl? If it were happening all of the time, no one would buy Hondas.

I would like support from Honda i the form of a loaner car because it is taking so long to get a new windshield for reasons unknown. It has not been a quick fix. It could be a month or more that the HR-V is unusable. This is the point of my post, which is quite legitimate.

So, yesterday, my rear window of my 2016 HR-V EX-L shattered. Just kind of exploded from the inside out. This happened while it was sitting in my driveway, broad daylight, temp in the mid 80's, nobody around, we were all inside the house. We have a long driveway, so no chance of something being thrown from the road. My daughter and I had taken it out shopping earlier in the day, came home, was inside for several hours when my daughter realized a bag had been left in the car. She went outside, facing the front of the car and heard a loud pop. She didn't know what it was, yet looked around the yard. When she saw nothing, she proceeded to get her bag and when she closed the front passenger door, she heard glass fall. She went to the back of the car to see what was going on and found that the entire rear windshield had shattered and had a hole at the top, just under the visor. The odd thing was...the glass appeared to be curled outward, like something from the inside broke it. Unfortunately, my husband opened the hatch before snapping pics, but even with what glass is still intact, it the pieces are stacked from from the inside out. I know that the Odyssey had issues with the rear windshields spontaneously shattering, anyone else heard of this on the HR-V? I have no other problems with my HR-V. I love it to death! Except the headrests...I hate those! That's an easy fix though, I simply remove it while I'm driving!
Hey! THIS EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY in the parking lot of Publix. I was sitting in the car with the AC running while waiting for my husband to come out the store. I heard a loud bang and when I turned around, I saw a whole in the rear view window right in the area you described and the whole glass was shattered. No one around the car, nothing thrown at it as we searched the area for anything. My Honda HR-V is the newest 2023 model.

All this makes you wonder on hanging on to a HRV after the lease is up... I got a year and a few months to think about it on my 21 Sport...
i think the # of cases where this happens VS the number of HRV sold and its a very very small %-
and of course there are the people that post here that may not be actual HRV owners and are just trying to scare off potential sales ( like say a competing Nissan salesperson ? ) usually they just joined and never follow up with anything.

Post it here and if enough of them actually show up. NTSB will investigate and this will trigger a recall and etc…

So I spoke with the dealer.

It is a KNOWN issue. They have 3 with parts on back order mine makes 4 at one small volume dealership on new 2023s.

He said it is related to the rear defrost so do not use it if you can avoid until parts are available or there is a recall repair.
