Have this issue on my 16' HRV on both rear taillights. Enough water in both to fill a kiddie pool. I have HondaCare and they are completely useless and won't cover it. Straight up, the dealership quoted $705 to replace both (NOT!!!). After close to 5 months of back and forth with Honda US Customer Service to try and get them to address this (no updates on the case...they're totally useless) I broke down and bought both rear taillights on Carparts.com for ~$130 and replaced them myself this past weekend. It's getting colder each day that goes by and I couldn't wait any more for Honda to finally come back and say "sorry, there's nothing we can do." Honda's apathy on this issue has really changed my view of them.

Now...it's not a hard job to change the lights out...if I can do it anyone can. All in it was probably an hour for both lights. If you're out of warranty don't give the dealership the money. As others have mentioned: 2 acorn nuts on the hatch back, they were finger tight. An 8mm socket helps tighten them down or loosen. Then you remove the small plastic panel on the inside of the hatchback. You'll see 2 small lock nuts and you will need an 8mm or 5/16 box wrench to get them off. Tip: before you start loosening them, slide in a small tray or something small enough to catch the nut if it falls. Happened to me 2x and prevented the nut from falling into the hatch panel. After you get both off the whole light assembly comes off easy. I unclipped the light socket after I pulled the whole piece off the back which I found easier than trying to fiddle with it through the small access panel in the hatch. Before I put on the new lights I did a very, very thin bead of sealant across the top, and definitely in the 2 small pin holes at each end of the light assembly. After I got the first light back in place, I decided to pull down the panel to do the second one because I wanted more hand room to get the 2 nuts tightened. The panel just unclips and pulls down enough and that gave me plenty of room to get my hand in there with the box wrench.

I'm having the same problem, My 2016 HRV tail lights area filled with water along with my trunk door.

Why isn't it a recall, if so many people are having this problem.

What's the cheapest way to get the water out the tail light, without the dealerships robbing you.

Today I (hopefully) repaired the leak in my 2016 HR-V LX passenger side tail light assembly.

Just 4 retaining nuts and the assembly comes right out. Two are accessible from the outside edge of the lid. For the remaining two you need to remove the access cover (there is one on each side). An 8mm nut driver works fine for three but the fourth inner one requires an open end wrench. After you loosen it use your fingers to carefully remove the nut so it does not drop into the lid.

There is a large gasket around the area of the backup light and this is where the water poured out so I assume that is where it came in. The gasket has a groove where it fits to the assembly and I filled that groove with Permatex before reinstalling the gasket (see photos). If this does not solve the problem the next step will be to seal the entire light assembly around the edge.

In order to get the water out and to help with any future water issues, I drilled a 1/4" hole at the lowest point of the back of the assembly to allow it to drain out (see photo). Be careful to just go through the back plastic and don't damage the front.

There were still a few water droplets that I wanted to get out before putting everything back together. I tried compressed air which helped but not entirely so I put the whole unit into my clothes dryer on a shelf made for drying sneakers and other things (such as a tail light) that you don't want to tumble around (see photo). I set the dryer at a medium temperature for 15 minutes and hoped it would not melt the plastic. This worked great and all of the water was removed after another shot of compressed air.

More rain expected for the next few days so we will see if this solved the problem.

It is more convenient and faster to use a hairdryer.

I'm having the same problem on my left rear side. Out of warranty so I guess I will disassemble the unit and try to drain it and reseal. Also, my driver's door is out of alignment. Just appeared with no reason. No wrecks, bumps or anything. I guess I will attempt to correct that , too.

Hi, I have a 2016 HRV and recently noticed the water in my taillights, Has anyone had this covered under a warranty or did you have to pay for it.

I also get water in my tailgate (trunk door) whenever it rains. Has anyone had this problem

Hi @Malisa - at this point your HRV is long past its warranty period. Anything that comes up will be your cost. If you do a simple search on this forum you'll find quite a few different possible causes.

Thank you, I just wasn't sure if there was an extended warranty that I wasn't aware of.
