Hello Everyone!

After reading MANY posts, I find that there are hundreds of incidents of Hondas, especially the 2016-2017 HRVs with leaking water issues coming in from various places into the interiors and making a mess. I bought a 2016 Honda HRV brand new and did not have a water issue until about a year or two ago - can't quite remember when I first noticed it. But it's clearly a problem now and my car has less than 45,000 miles on it.

Ok guys you can laugh at me, but initially when I heard a liquid sloshing around I thought "hmmm why am I hearing this gasoline sloshing around in the fuel tank now?" It wasn't logical, but that's what I thought it must be. THEN, this year, I started smelling a mildew odor and the light went on in my head. I typically drove the car with the back seats down flat because I have 2 large dogs who are in the car from time to time. So, this past week, I got into the rear of the car and found about 2 inches of water in the spare tire well and the floor mats in the back seat were soaking wet. Nothing was leaking from the roof or sunroof that I could see. But mildew had started growing on the leather seats because they were down flat and capturing lots of moisture. So, I've now cleaned it all up, but it rained last night and sure enough, when I checked the spare tire well and back seat floor this morning, they were both wet again and about an inch of water had pooled in the spare tire well. This happened when the car was parked. One more thing to consider - when I park my car, I don't always put it in the garage on a flat surface, but typically back it into my driveway which slants downhill. So I am wondering, am I seeing this water toward the back of my car for that reason? So many other posts indicate the water is in the front of the car or even ceiling area.

WHEREVER these leaks are coming from, they are unacceptable in my opinion. There are SOOOOO many posts on the Honda Forum sites about water leaks that I believe this matter should have generated a recall on the part of Honda to find the source of these leaks and correct the problems. We bought cars not boats!!

I live in Pennsylvania and have patronized Scott Honda in West Chester PA which has been an exemplary dealer. Over the years, I have purchased 5 Hondas from them. I called them this morning and inquired about water leak problems specifically in the HRVs. They denied any knowledge of this being a problem. Hard to believe after reading all those posts. HOWEVER, I am due for an oil change soon and they advised me to make my appointment on a Tu or Th because that is when they deal with "water leaks." Hello???? Say what?? It was said just like it was another type of service - your water leak problem!! My problem???!!!

SO it seems to me that Honda is not owning up to very poor quality control in some if not all of their cars. Someone on a post mentioned poor workmanship that takes place at the Mexican assembly plants. I just don't know. In any case, does anyone know why there has not been a class action lawsuit against Honda about this? Clearly, Honda has a water leakage problem in MANY of their cars.

I have decided this will be my last Honda. But now I have to worry about how to correct this problem and unload this car when it's a bad time to be buying a car in this inflationary environment, spend more money than I want to spend for another car that is a car and not a boat. Very annoying and I'm very annoyed.

should be easy to find.. Dry it out good and get in the car with the hatch closed. Have someine with a hose spray water underneath it around the well and see if you can see the water come in.. If you do dry it out well and put a seam sealer on it...thats what I would do..

Yes, they have troubler shooters working on certain days. My dealer is the same.

You could probably fix the issue easily and cheaply.

Opening and closing the hatch can cause flex, and crack the body seam that runs along the roof rails. Look carefully at the 'corners' if the hatch opening for any slight crack in the seam.

If you see one, buy some FLOWABLE windshield sealant such as Permatex 81730
and seal it up. (warning, this stuff dries a bit 'yellow' so don't apply too much)

Another possible entryway could be around the tail light openings of the body (not the hatch). Also, the body seams back there.

I have a 2016 and recently pulled the spare out-cleaning is all-and found this in spare tire area. That's alot of water in my opinion. Wife sat in back and I sprayed was all over back of car and it was coming in passenger side wheel well inside under the carpet. Is this maybe entering in from rear light fixture? Let me know what you guys think.
thanks

Your pic doesn't show any apparent 'flow'

Coating the gaskets around the rear lights (with a synthetic grease that will not deteriorate the foam seal) could eliminate that possibility.

Ok I removed the tail light fixture and found nothing out of the ordinary-dirt cleaned all that up and put a drop of silicone on each screw hole for mounting this fixture to the car. A couple of pics showing where water is coming in at. I did not remove the carpet as I would have to remove the weatherstripping from around rear hatch and all the carpet on that side all of which is held in place with those plastic snaps that will undoubtedly break when removing. The seams where the metal body parts meat seem ok. Thoughts…..Jim

I had/have the same problem with my 2016 LX (no sunroof). Water in the spare tire well after rain with no obvious source. Tried using a garden hose but no leaks occurred. Finally noticed water dripping down the driver's side back panel by the vent near the hatch. I sealed all the body joints I could find with silicone caulk including the roof channels, tail light enclosures, hatch washer hose connection and hatch electrical flex tube. Still no success. Finally a few months ago I bought some silicone grease and applied it to all those areas as well as the antenna fin and liberally around all the hatch channels. No leaks since then and we have had some heavy rain storms. Still not sure where the water was coming in from. My next step if it happens again is to use the flowable windshield sealant that was suggested on this forum.
Good luck.

I don't know if this is still useful for you, but I had this same problem with water in the trunk. By dismantling the trim at the rear driver's side, I found a disconnected pipe and by running water on the roof of the HRV, I saw the water coming through this pipe. By reconnecting the 2 ends, everything is now ok, see the photos

Thanks, but could you provide a picture from farther away...so that folks could tell where that tubing is located within the car.

I found thanks to Jimbo's 2016 's pictures, on july 3rd, he explaines where ha saw some water, in fact the pipes are just behind this metallic part.
To access it, I had to remove many things, the plank on the spare wheel, then the carpet in the spare wheel , then the carpet and plastic parts on the left.

What is the purpose of this pipe? Where is it supposed to drain water from and to?

I saw in your post you have no sunroof, I’m assuming Titom91 has a sunroof. These “pipes” should be the drains for his sunroof, sometimes they disconnect from vibration or they get clogged and start leaking out of the connections

Of course! I should have realized that. I had an old Accord with 2 drain tubes in the front and 2 in the rear. They would always clog. No sunroof on my HR-V LX.
