Windshield & Mirror Glass Distortion

43858 Views 124 Replies 46 Participants Last post by  Dr. Toboggan
Although there is much to like about our new HR-V, it has badly distorted glass in the windshield and in the inside rear-view mirror. Let me acknowledge that some people are more or less sensitive to distortion than I; but; in my case, it's bad enough to cause nausea and comes close to triggering vertigo episodes. For me, and my wife if she is with me, the distortion is a safety issue and could require that I pull over to the side of the road if the distortion should trigger an event.

After a month of back and forth with the dealer and, today, with the American Honda rep, we reached an agreement that Honda would replace the windshield. Although the rep argued that the distortion was "normal" in auto glass, I told him that my sample of cars over many years suggested that this level of distortion is not normal. In fact, this is the ONLY car's factory glass that has ever been an issue for me. So much for "normal." The rep agreed to the replacement on the condition that it would be a one-time replacement and that was the end of replacing the windshield - just once - no more. I agreed to accept that risk and we had a deal.

It seems no one at the dealership had told the rep about the rear-view mirror and that information was a complete surprise to him. We looked at several mirrors in a variety of cars on the showroom floor and none of the standard mirrors were without distortion. I told the rep that, because mirrors were quite inexpensive, there should be no one-time restriction on the mirror replacement.

A third issue related to the failure of the Voice Tag function had also been addressed. At the point of addressing the mirror, we had an agreement that American Honda would replace the windshield and address the Voice Tag issue to the HFS (Hands Free System) engineers and support personnel for possible resolution. Upon raising the mirror issue, the rep apparently reconsidered everything and told me that he didn't see any outcome that would satisfy me, the customer, and he reneged on the agreements he had already reached and told me that we should simply go our separate ways.

NO further offer of any kind was made to carry through with any effort to resolve these safety issues. I am troubled by what I consider to be a lack of integrity and honor in reneging on the agreements already reached. I must now consider all my options in dealing with the issues as I see them. One thing is for sure...

...First Honda ever for me, WORST CUSTOMER SUPPORT I'VE EVER RECEIVED FROM ANY MANUFACTURER, and LAST HONDA, EVER, FOR ME!!! For my next car, I'm going back to Toyota where I've been treated as a valued customer from the very first day.

Actually, if you are on a computer, just click on their name to the left of their post and the second option down is to send a private message. You don't have to be friends with them.

I've noticed the same issue when turning/looking to the right.... a lot of distortion but I only notice it depending on the type of background I'm looking toward...
I haven't decided if I'm going to pursue this yet with Honda but I think I will try the phone number posted by the Honda Rep here in the forum.
I always appreciate the effort to make things right.

I actually was on the very verge of making an offer yesterday evening and that one thing really nixed it for me. I had looked for this windshield issue at other times of the day and on a sunny afternoon previously with this particular LX, but didn't see it. However, late yesterday evening, on the verge of going through with a deal I took one last look to see if I could see this windshield distortion and there it was. As I turned my head to the right (at about 45 degrees) about mid-level in the windshield, it looked like sort of a vertical wavering of the glass as I moved my head slightly to the left and right. I couldn't believe it. Is this normal? I couldn't seem to replicate it in my other 2 cars.. It was the final straw and it's too bad as the car was just fantastic to drive, I mean I really enjoyed it and I wanted to buy it but it just had several of these minor flaws, front passenger door not flush with the front quarter panel, that rear high brake light being not centered (all of the others in the trim that I didn't want were centered, the flat paint used in the interior of the doors). Is this just some sort of unacknowledged prejudice against this car because it's made in Mexico and it's a first run in the first year of production and shouldn't common sense tell you to avoid the first year of anything? I don't know and it bothers the **** out of me because this car just fit so many of the checkmarks of what I need. Again, nothing huge and glaring or even safety or operational -related (everything in the car worked perfectly and I had total confidence in the brakes, steering, everything), just the workmanship was not up to Honda's previous very high standards). I just thought that maybe they need a few years of getting rid of the rough spots in the assembly process and these worries will be a thing of the past.

Thanx, randY49. I figured it out with your excellent help!

BobSmith8901, thanx for your assessment. I guess I'm not imagining the distortion after all - not that I really thought I was.
Hello Price, thank you for reaching out regarding the issues you have experienced with your 2016 Honda HRV. Have you had this issue inspected/diagnosed at your local Honda dealer? We would like to further review this on your behalf. In order to do so we would need further information. Please provide VIN, mileage, full name, best phone number, name of service dealer, and name of sales dealer. With the help of a couple other posters, I figured out what I needed to do to send you a private message - and, I have done so. Please note that I've indicated that I want nothing more to do with Shockley Honda as I believe they have failed to provide the appropriate warranty support and I believe they have lied to me. I look forward to your help in correcting the safety defects that Shockley ultimately ignored.
Bumping this because I noticed that the windshield was a bit distorted too.

Windshield glass quality seems cheap, there's a little more distortion especially towards the outer edges than I am used to seeing. My brother works for Lexus and commented on the windshield right away. For the record, I do NOT experience distortion to the level described in the previous posts, but it is certainly not crystal clear perfect glass. I think it's just cheaper glass that Honda is using.

But it also might be that the convex portion of the side mirror is screwing with my eyes. Switching back and forth between the driver's side mirror and the windshield throw my vision off - maybe it's because I wear glasses? Who knows. I'm planning on covering the convex portion somehow.

It seems that Honda's request for me to contact them was useless. After sending them a message, which included my phone number, over a month ago I've not seen nor heard anything from them. The experience just reaffirms my negative opinion of Honda.

That is what I figured. I thought about bringing it up to Honda but I think it'd be a waste of my time. If it bothers me enough perhaps I can replace it through a local shop and find some higher quality glass rather than chancing it with Honda's glass again.

Did they replace the windshield once as you originally requested?

I agree with you 100% that the rearview mirror is very cheap and that glass definitely has some distortion. I checked the rear hatch glass and that is fine. I was planning on adding a larger wide-view mirror over the rearview mirror once I saw the size anyway.

lbhonda, I've had no support from Honda at any level. The rep's original offer to replace the windshield once, and only once, was reneged on within minutes of the original agreement. There has not been any progress on that, the inside rear-view mirror, or the hands-free phone issues. I've considered the same action as you: replace the windshield at my own expense with something other than the crap Honda glass. Same for the mirror.

Ah ok, sorry to hear that. :(

If I end up replacing the windshield I will let you know, although with reports of heavy rains this winter it probably won't be anytime soon.

I am planning on ordering a wide angle rearview mirror off Amazon soon and will update this thread accordingly.

Thanx, lbhonda. I'll be curious to know where you get your windshield and how it compares. Also, good luck with your mirror.
I think I need to stop reading this stuff because I looked for this windshield distortion while I took my car out for lunch and I see what folks are talking about. Thing is it at the very bottom of the windshield and would probably only affect someone who is 4'11" tall sitting on a phone book. I think its quite comical all these folks are up in arms about how the glass is bent at the bottom. Crazy.

ssarver413,

I wish my windshield was just "bent at the bottom." I started this thread because my windshield is distorted throughout the normal range of vision and it is apparent that others have seen the same thing. I'm glad that your windshield is apparently not a problem; but, there is nothing comical about the issues caused by the distortions.
I just think "some people" need hobbies and just have too much time on their hands. Obviously. Have a nice day!

"all these folks?" I mentioned that the windshield has a small level of distortion. All windshields do. I guarantee it's a combo of cheap glass + the rake of the windshield. Google Honda OR Acura windshield distortion and a number of models will pop up. It's not a new thing.

I guess we do all need hobbies, including Honda, who has acknowledged this issue themselves: http://automobiles.honda.com/information/frequently-asked-questions.aspx?Question=14

If you don't have a problem with the windshield, why are you posting in this thread?
I guess you didn't use the windshield when you test drove the vehicle. I said I saw what was being talked about. I just can't believe people are complaining about it...
As for the bottom 1 or 2 inches of windshield distortion, isn't there built in "Front wiper De-icer" (heater wires built in the glass) ?
It shows standard feature in all Canadian trims
same issue on the 2016 Civic LX

The dealer brought in the Honda factory rep and he determined that the distortion in both the windshield and the mirror were within normal manufacturing specifications. Of course, if coke-bottle bottoms met the specs, he'd have told me the same thing. My opinion is that their specs are bad. I've been refused any action by American Honda; so, I doubt any other dealer would say otherwise.

As for the mirror, when looking there, everything I see behind the car is wavy and distorted. I opened the rear hatch to make sure the problem wasn't the rear window glass; it was not. I simply moved my head back and forth sideways while looking in the mirror and everything was distorted. Since no one drives while constantly looking in the mirror, this is not as severe a problem as the windshield; but, it still "reflects" badly on Honda quality and should be fixed.
Hey man I feel your pain. :crying:

Just bought a new 2016 Honda Civic LX; car was bought in MD and manufactured in Alliston, Ontario in November 2015 if that means anything. SAME EXACT ISSUE you're having with the windshield and interior mirror.

Dealer says it's my eyes. :nerd:

Which it could very well be if nobody else is complaining, haha. Except then I found this thread.... :|

Hopefully more people who have this issue speak up and expect better standards from Honda.:)
