Windshield Replacement $1700 CDN

Took a stone near the bottom edge centre of the windshield which grew into a crack and tracked into the driver's vision area.

Insurance agent advised a genuine Honda windshield as aftermarket ones often fit poorly and sometimes have optically poor glass. So that advice was followed.

Our dealer ordered the windshield, then sub-contracted installation to the nearby automotive glass "experts".

The lower windshield trim piece is several millimeters away from the glass edge, and the edge of the glass is several millimeters above this trim piece in some locations. And they reinstalled the trim with the broken plastic clips so the trim just flops around.

I returned to the dealership the next day, and met with a sincere and sympathetic Service Advisor, who offer several reasons that no corrective action could be offered.

The car has not yet been driven in rain to see if it leaks!!

Then the customer service survey came by email, and I completed it honestly, factually, and in professional business language. I expect nothing further from this survey.

In all honesty, I'm a very senior citizen, and other life's challenges are far more important that a poorly installed windshield. I accept gracefully that sometimes we are just victimized by incompetence, maybe even frequently.

I can feel your anger and pain from here downunder mate.

For $1700 I'd be taking it back for them to fix the problem.
But then again they are not as professional as made out by the Dealership.

We don't have insurance on any of our car windshields.

Last time I checked, windshield insurance is about CAD$150/year and the average windshield costs about CAD$300. So if a windshield lasts us more than 2 years, we come out ahead.

However, I haven't priced a windshield lately and we wouldn't purchase an OEM windshield.
Our HRV has an OEM Honda windshield, likely the original one.
It's quite sandblasted but no cracks or major chlps at all.

Cad$1700 is the highly inflated price that the Honda dealer charged the insurance company.

I wonder what the cash price for a non-Honda windshield for a 1st Gen HRV is?

Edit: I just did an online quote. Cad$400 installed for our 2016 HRV.
So I need to get at least 3 years out of any windshield.

We always specify the dark band at the top of our windshields for a few extra bucks.

You paid $1700 for an incorrectly installed windshield and you accepted their excuses as to why it can't be fixed? I really would like to know what kind of excuse they could have provided you that allowed you to walk away and come post online about how unhappy you were. There's no excuse! Not even my genuine Lexus windshield on my 2015 LS460 cost that much to replace!!! It amazes me how easily some people will walk away after paying for bad service! It has NOTHING to do with being professional!

What is the black strip on windshield called?

The Purpose of the Frit (Black Band) and Spots on Windshield ...

The frit is a black enamel band that is literally baked into the edges of the windshield glass, accompanied by the border of black dots you are wondering about. The purpose of the frit is to provide an etched surface that allows adhesive to bond to the glass.

I'm referring to the dark sunshield band across the top of the windshield.
I don't think that any 1st Gen HRV windshields came with that band.
For most 3rd party windshields, you can choose that sunshield band as an option for a replacement windshield.

You can also install a window tint band or eyebrow to a windshield that does not have it.
But if you are replacing the windshield, I recommend to just add that option to the replacement windshield.

Our HRV with no sunshield band across the top of the windshield:

Our Acura with the sunshield band across the top of the windshield:
Wheel Car Tire Land vehicle Vehicle

Just had my windshield replaced yesterday. Home service by safelite, which was referred by my insurance. Had a $500 deductible. Safelite charged me $483.99 installed. Replaced all the rubber strips. Did a clean job. Drove it today with no issues on visibility. Waiting for some rain to check if there’s any leak.

Before anyone decided to cancel their windshield-related insurance. Make sure your car doesn't have a safety system with a camera on the windshield. It can be expensive to recalibrate it after a windshield replacement.
