JDM Honda Vezel RS steering wheel + blue LED center console lighting installed

I've been eyeing the leather steering wheel with sport grips from the new Honda Vezel RS for awhile. I have an EX, with the urethane steering wheel, and had gotten by with a pretty good leather steering wheel wrap I purchased off eBay, but it was always my intention to swap it out. My original plan was to swap to the leather wheel from the EX-L, but after seeing it in person, I wasn't too thrilled.

The Vezel RS wheel is finished with a smooth higher quality leather wrap similar to what is found in modern Acuras. The sport thumb grips also add a bit of welcome thickness in this strategic area.

As people who have read my previous posts know, I've been getting most of my parts from JDM Yamato, and contacted them again to see if they could get me this steering wheel. I also decided to ask about the blue LED center console illumination kit, since I've been eyeing that for a long time. The guys at JDM Yamato weren't sure if it would work with the USDM HR-V, but I figured I'd make it work if anything. They uploaded the Japanese installation instructions for me to look over, and it looked easy enough to do, so I jumped on it.

2 days later they had the parts shipped out to me in time for a 4th of July weekend install.

As usual, excellent packing by JDM Yamato:

This won't be one of my more detailed installation reviews, as there really isn't anything too complicated about the steering wheel swap... I had it done in less than an hour. There's a ton of information on youtube to give you a basic idea how to do this... personally I've done quite a few and the HRV was one of the easier ones I've done. Just a few tips:

1) There are two T30 Torx bolts that secure the airbag to the steering wheel. Buy new replacements from Honda, don't reuse them.

2) This steering wheel uses a 10mm hex bolt, not the typical 19mm nut I'm used to seeing. Make sure you have a 10mm hex socket and a good breaker bar. In hindsight, I would also recommend replacing this bolt with a new one from Honda.

3) To remove the airbag (remember to disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-20 minutes just to err on the side of safety first), all you need to do is remove the two Torx bolts on either side of the wheel and the airbag lifts away from the center. Disconnect the horn connector from the airbag, and the green and grey connectors are removed by pinching on the white tabs and pulling the socket out and away from the airbag. It's a little different from other Hondas I've worked on.

4) The steering wheel trim is a bitch to remove but it does come off with some effort. Remove the trim over the phone controls first and disconnect the connector. Work on prying the bottom spoke free, and then the left and right control covers. Disconnect the connectors once you have them a bit free of the wheel. The rear cover took a bit of juice to get off. Good luck.

The center console LED kit was not very difficult to install... it took me just over an hour. It does require taking apart the whole center console, to which you can only access by removing the climate control console... which requires removal of the undertray on both driver and passenger side. Most trim pieces on the center console are just clipped on, and those that aren't have bolts in obvious locations. This is only time consuming, but not hard to do.

The problem I ran into is that it's apparent that the JDM Vezel has template markings on the inside of the center console for drill holes to mount this accessory (as I saw on the instructions), and since it's not an official NA Honda Accessory for the HR-V, these markings were not present on the panels for my car. I had to MacGuyver a solution to line up the LED bars and the console panel and drill accurately.

Like other official interior lighting accessories from Honda, these come with a harness that taps into an existing power source. In this case it taps into the small LED that lights up the area by the HDMI/USB ports. Thus, they dim and brighten with your other console lighting.

I test drove the car after the install and am very happy with the additions. The center console lights are fairly bright and add a nice touch... altho they were pretty expensive for what they are. The steering wheel, on the other hand, really improves the driving experience.

For those people trying to source the Vezel RS wheel on their own, the part # is 78501-T7A-N00ZA.

Actually I didn't know the part number until JDM Yamato got back to me after checking with Honda. I figured I'd share the info in case people had other means they wanted to use to try to source the part.

I've been looking for the 6-speed version of that center console too, but it's not a Japan part, since they don't have manual... prolly Euro or other Asian market unfortunately. After taking apart the console the other night, I think I'll just sand/spray that trim panel myself if it comes to that. Maybe carbon wrap or something.

#9 ·
I purchased this one along with some other carbon fiber pieces. I like the look and don't have the skills to wrap.

I would post the link but I'm too new:

Search for - "Carbon Fiber Color Fit For Honda Vezel HR-V 16 -17 Inner Gear Shift Panel Cover" on ebay

I see that some of the over seas HR-V's have heated steering wheels, is it possible to have the dealership install on of these babies on a American HR-V?

Heated Steering Wheel

I?m looking for a way to hook up a heated steering wheel for my 2016 HR-V. I?m noticing the CR-V has one that can be purchased online, but I?m not sure if the mounting is exactly the same, or if the HR-V even has wiring capable of using it. Has anyone else researched/experimented on this?

#12 ·
Here's a quick update on my research:

There is no such thing as a heated steering wheel for the HR-V or Vezel as far as I have found.

However, it appears the CR-V's steering wheel is the same mount as the HR-V, so I believe the CR-V heated wheel is compatible with the HR-V, pending one assumption: it has to have the same type of fuse box in the same place (behind driver quarter kick plate near the brake pedal). Given the overlap in design in that space, it seems fairly likely, but since the CR-V is based on the Civic platform and the HR-V is based on the Fit platform, I can't be sure yet. I'll update this thread again once I've found HR-V electrical schematics.

For those people trying to source the Vezel RS wheel on their own, the part # is 78501-T7A-N00ZA.

Well it's been -20C (-5F) here for the last couple of days and while our HRV has been great so far, I hate it's plastic/rubber/urethane steering wheel.
Likely because our 3 other vehicles have leather steering wheels.

That Vezel leather steering wheel is awesome but a google search brings up some Asian websites that I don't know anything about at about US$1000.

The HRV EX-L leather steering wheel is readily available at the Honda dealership for US$350/CAD$500 or so.
Too pricey for me.

Used EX-L ones are readily available (approx US$100 + shipping) but it's hard to buy something used like this on-line.
You really need to see it in person rather than rely on pictures.

So I'm on the hunt for a good used one locally.

The gentleman who sold me the 2019 headlights for a 2016 says the 2017 CRV steering wheel should have the same mount. He also said the pins would have to be re-routed and the CRV airbag would need to be ordered.

I'm guessing he has access to diagrams so I may go ahead with this project in the near future if I can hire his help.

the 2017 CRV has options for both ACC and non ACC models

Heated Steering Wheel (2017-2018)

will keep you guys updated if there's anything new

#20 ·
So Go Garage MY did some research and said you'd have to cut into the airbag socket since the crv airbag socket is different. If ever something goes wrong with the re-wiring, it's possible the airbag won't deploy so he said to abandon the project.

GO Garage MY

It's too bad that the 9th gen accord didn't come with the heated steering wheel since that's what Go Garage uses in his HRV.

I think the Vezel RS steering wheel that slippyturtle bought and reviewed in another thread is the best plug and play option for our HRV

JDM Honda Vezel RS steering wheel + blue LED center...

Go Garage mentioned the leather finishing on the Vezel RS wheel is the same as the CRV. This "ultrasuede smooth leather" is of a higher quality than the one in the EX-L trims of the HRV. It also has the grips and the coloured stitching.

I ordered it from a Japanese supplier a few hours ago so I'll provide the details once it ships out in case anyone else is interested in going down this route.

Wow Michael, Merry Christmas!

As I mentioned in the other thread, the Vezel sport leather steering wheel is awesome.
But last time I checked it was US$1000. Super nice but way too pricey for me.
Just for comparison a new HRV EX-L leather steering wheel from the Honda dealer is US$350/CAD$500.

I hate the rubber steering wheel in our HRV.
As usual for our HRV, I cheaped out and found a used 2019 HRV EX-L leather steering wheel.

It came from an Ebay Portland Oregon autowrecker last summer, US$60/Cad$85 to my door.
Kept watching them on Ebay until I found one that looked mint, newer from a 2019 and at a good price.

Luckily it showed up exactly as the Ebay pics, totally mint. I will have to install it, likely next spring!
A little luck and patience, plus I'm really cheaping out on our HRV.

My research showed that the latest models of Honda Fit leather steering wheels are identical to the HRV except for the color of the plastic center trim.

Best of luck with the new steering wheel. It will greatly improve the feel and look of your HRV.

Edit: Now that I look at it, perhaps Einz, our excellent moderator, can move our 2 posts to the Vezel steering wheel thread, rather than off-topic in this thread.

Merry Christmas to you too!

I like your eBay idea more than the Vezel RS as the pricing can't be beat if you can find a clean one.

If anyone might be interested in the Vezel RS wheel (part# 78501-T7A-N00ZA) , Impex Japan just shipped out the order.

Hi, how long it take to process your order? I placed order on 7-Feb and until now still in processing

#26 ·
Wow, that is a great price for the Vezel leather steering wheel! Nice find!
Essentially the same price as the EX-L leather steering wheel.
Hmmm, I wonder if I made the right choice. I'm sure I could sell the EX-L leather steering wheel I now have if I change my mind.

Are you familiar with that Japanese Impex website?
I have only order a few JDM/EDM Honda parts over the years, always thru a US parts supplier.
I'm too wary to go thru an off-shore website directly.

There is a thread on this forum with details on the steering wheel swap. Not hard, just be careful with the airbag and the plastic trim.

This was my first time dealing with Impex but I doubt it'll be the last since I noticed the CVT filters were pretty cheap on there compared to the dealer.

I researched them before ordering and found lots of reviews (priuschat, 4runnerforum, maximaforum... etc). Their website says they've been operating since 2002.

I wouldn't be weary if the off-shore website accepts Paypal. The payment source stays hidden from the vendor and Paypal should cover the purchase without involving the credit card company if something goes wrong. The trick is to make sure the payment is insured (never send it through friends&family) and the shipment is insured with whatever carrier is used.

I used to be weary but Paypal allowed me to order unique items from vendors like Go Garage in Malaysia and it's made my HRV that much better.

A few things to be aware about if going ahead with Impex:
-You place an order for the part and pay only for the part so $358.40USD + 3.4% paypal fee = $370.58USD
-The part arrives at Impex about 2-3 days later and then you can request it to be shipped. At this point, the automated system will ask you to pay $24.47USD ($25.20USD with Paypal) because the part weighs 2KG but the automated system is just estimating the cost
-After Impex packages the shipment, they'll notice that the correct shipping fee is $52.06USD due to the dimensions so you'll have to send a third payment of $27.59USD (28.41USD with Paypal) to cover the difference.

If being shipped to the United States, there won't be any taxes or duties because the shipment is under $800USD.

If being shipped to Canada, FedEx charges $10CAD to process the shipment and GST / HST (if applicable). If you have a FedEx account (free to open one up), FedEx won't charge the $10 processing fee and you'll only have to pay GST and/or HST. In the dozen or so packages I've received from FedEx Express, they've only charged taxes. I think duties (6%) is supposed to be charged but since it's for personal use and not commercial, they don't bother..

Delivery should take 7 days

My mechanic installed the new wheel today. He repeated what slippyturtle said about the plastic trim pieces being hard to remove but it all went well in the end.

I've only had it for half a day but I'm shocked at how it feels like I'm driving a different car.

The look and feel of this leather is something else.

It glides so smooth against the hands when completing a turn.

I love it!

Not sure if this is of any help to anyone, but Germany* has the 1.5 Turbo Sport which appears to have a steering wheel similar to the images posted above - red piping instead of white. It also comes with a 6 Speed manual so that may also be of interest for those looking for the piano black centre console trim, see the following video;

* it was also sold in the UK but then you get into the whole 'LHD/RHD' conversion issues!

#32 ·
That German HRV is so nice.

The piano black centre console trim is also available on Canadian touring HRV models from 2019-2020.

American touring HRVs did not get the piano black even though they're both made in the same Celaya factory.

I'm going to try and have it installed in my 2016 if the parts aren't too expensive.

It's interesting to read your posts @Hadleys Taxi and watch videos of the European HRV.

So far I've noticed you guys:
-don't have a audible beep to confirm the car is locked
-you have one touch up and down rear windows while we have to hold down the button
-the rear windows go almost all the down while here there's quite a bit of window left
-you have parking sensors. not everyone likes the camera so for some, this is very convenient

#38 ·
Excellent suggestion. It would only be available from Canadian wreckers if shopping from North America since the Americans didn't get the piano black and I can't find any on eBay as of yet.

Will keep an eye out as the biggest wrecking company (LKQ) will ship to your nearest location for free.

I'm surprised the European wrecker is charging £75. I see the parts brand new from Germany for around 100EUR.

Shipping is the issue when ordering from across the pond so even with higher retail prices, the local parts department almost always wins.
