I just had my CVT transmission fail on my 2018 HR-V AWD EX that I bought as certified pre-owned in 2021 with 60K Miles on the OD. It came with a one year bumper to bumper warranty and then a 7 year / 100k mile powertrain warranty from the Honda dealership I purchased it from. Just when I hit a little over 100K miles I heard some grinding and due to just being over the warranty period I brought it to my regular mechanic who after looking it over did not diagnose a transmission problem since the noise came only when under load. They found a service bulletin from Honda about a noise that sounded just like the noise that was coming from my car. the bulletin said it could be fixed with a drivetrain software update at a Honda dealership. So I made an appointment with my dealership. Before I could bring it in, when I was driving home one day from picking up my daughter, the car dash warning lights all started flashing and the car went into a limp mode and I was able to pull it over to the highway shoulder. When I stopped I could not get it to come off the emergency parking brake which had become engaged. Even the tow truck that finally came could not release the electronic e-brake. Found out later we were not following the correct procedure to release it. Anyway, had it towed to my mechanic since it was out of warranty and the diagnostic code was for a speed sensor. Then I got a call from them that when they pulled the sensor out of the transmission it was covered with metal shavings from the transmission. Then without removing the aluminum transmission pan, they did the magnet test and the magnet stuck to the pan indicating that there was enough metal in the pan to attract the magnet. Luckily I remembered from this forum about the tramsimission service bulletin that Honda put out for the CVT transmissions in 2016-2020 model year HR-V’s with defective belts that deteriorated and left metal shavings in the transmissions causing their failure. So I drove it to the dealership and eventually did wind up replacing the transmission totally at Honda USA’s cost including providing a loaner for the duration of the repair!

Much appreciation to this forum for that piece of information on the transmission issue. Hats off also to Brian and Carlos of Gerald Honda of Countryside Illinois who took care of the entire matter for me! The transmission is now covered by the remainder of the 150k mile /7 year warranty that Honda had extended for these problematic transmissions.

Honda sure ain't what it used to be.......

With the Kondratiev cycle being about 80 years, and Honda cars coming on the scene in a big way in about 1975, then Honda will be a nonentity in about 30 years or 2055 or so.

Created a new thread but just discovered this so I'll post in here as well for future reference to others:

I have 75k miles but my 7 years ran out last March. The dealer was able to help out some by offering 30% off but still feel they should have replaced the whole thing under warranty since it's a known issue. This was our first Honda and bought it on brand reliability but do not have the best feeling about the quality anymore.

I have a 2016 HRV, bought Dec 2016, so within the 7-year warranty. Out of curiosity, is this issue something I need to "wait and see" with, or is it something I can ask my local dealership to take care of, while it's still in warranty?

PS: When I go to the Honda "Recalls" page, I get told that none are open, so I assume this isn't a recall as such.

I'm not following.. Your 7 year CVT warranty is gone.
If the in-service date of your HRV was Dec 2016, 7 years was Dec 2023.

Did you not have the CVT recall/TSB completed in the last few years?
How about all the other possible recalls on your HRV?

Oh wow you're right... I miscalculated and thought I had another year! I did have some recall done on it where they did a software update and something else. Maybe that was it? All other recalls done AFAIK, so maybe I'm good.

Lol, I hope you are on tracking your HRV's maintenance much better than you are tracking your HRV's recalls!

For example, when and how many miles ago did your change your CVT's fluid?

It’s just a software update so you should get it taken care of at the dealership asap.

Not yet - but haven't even hit 40,000 miles. Was planning on getting it done soon though - they finally told me in the most recent oil change to get it done.

My wife's 2016 HRV just started throwing P0793 code and won't go over 40mph. The dash lights are on and brake system light is on. Battery is good 13.5V, gas cap no issues. It has 88k miles on it. Unfortunately it's just outside the extended warranty (of course) and need to decide what to do. I need to get it towed to get it further diagnosed and fear the transmission is the issue based on the code and info on the internet (???). I could have it towed to Honda or a reputable Transmission change shop. Does anyone know if Honda has gone beyond the 7 year extended warranty on the CVT? I hate to take it there and get stuck with a huge dealer bill if the transmission exchange can do it at lower cost.

Seeking advice on what route to take here?

Update: Transmission CVT Steel Belt Fail. Honda America would not cover being a whole 3 months out of the extended warranty (for their terrible lack of quality) on these crap CVT Transmissions. Both the Dealer and private shop said this is a common issue. We have been loyal Honda buyers (5 in the past 24 years). No longer. Honda powertrain quality has disappeared and their not there at all to support their loyal customers. We also buy Toyota Hybrids which have been flawless in the powertrain quality area. I would not touch a Honda hybrid, much less any Honda now with their quality dive. I had heard this and now experienced first hand. Sad Honda. I hope the best for any of you dealing with these Honda design quality issues. We'll be fixing ours at a Private (non-Honda shop) and trading in on a new reliable Toyota. The Toyota Hybrid's we have had also have been extremely reliable and mpg efficient. Highly recommended. Best wishes all and thanks for all the help trying to figure out this HONDA QUALITY and SUPPORT FAIL.

I remember when Honda was getting a foothold in the USA by selling small motorcycles in Hardware stores and did not yet have dealerships. In subsequent decades Honda provided quality that was astounding and customers bought, bought, and bought.

But Honda is likely now run by managers who are not car/motorcycle enthusiasts, and would be just as happy making refrigerators, or shoes, etc.

When passion disappears, so does quality, and Honda is way over the hill on peak quality.

When Walter P Chrysler died, his company began to sputter

When Soichiro Honda died, his company began to sputter.

I think the Toyoda family founded and is still running Toyota, and their company has not yet sputtered.

I’m not impressed by Toyota, although they’re considered the most American made vehicle now.

Sorry to hear your 2016 HRV CVT trans failed past the 7 year extended warranty.

In your other posts you mentioned that your HRV had 88k miles on it when the CVT failed.
You also mentioned "Honda lifetime CVT trans fluid".

Did you ever change the CVT fluid in your HRV?

... My wife's HRV CVT failed at only 88k miles .... Honda's Lifetime transmission fluid is a pile of crap.

Hello everyone. I have a Honda HR-V 2018 with 120,000 Km (75,000 Miles) on it. I have changed the transmission oil at: 63,000 Km (39,000 Miles) and 100,000 Km (62,000 Miles). Every time I change the transmission fluid, I passed it through a fine filter and nothing was found and magnetic plug was clean I did the SB at around 65,000 Km (40,000 Miles). I am dead worried about this transmission failure. I am planning to keep this car as much as it runs with the goal of having at least 240,000 Km (150,000 Miles), approximately another 7 years. I have done all maintenances well ahead of the recommended intervals. Now I am worried if all these were done in vain! I don't mind changing the transmission fluid even at 20,000 Km (12,500 Miles) interval which means yearly for me. Do you think that the SB really helps? searching online, it seems that majority of failures are for 2016 model with some more on 2017 and 2018. What do you suggest?

IMO, with no warranty on your HRV CVT, you are justified in being worried.
IMO, every HRV owner with a CVT should be prepared for a CVT failure, both emotionally and financially!
Just like every Subaru, Nissan, Toyota and others with a CVT.

I was worried when we had our 2016 HRV CVT, enough to change the fluid way more than anyone else on this forum.

Even if you can swap in a good used CVT yourself in your garage, saving a ton of money, that would be no fun, plus downtime.

BY "SB", I assume you mean "TSB".
Going by this forum, I do think the CVT TSB (ECU s/w update) helped.
However as the 2016+ HRV"s get older with more miles on them, the reported failure rate seems to be increasing.

If you do keep your HRV, I do recommend to increase the CVT fluid change frequency.
It doesn't guarantee anything but it may help and it's easy and cheap.

We are sort of shopping for a replacement HRV, but I won't buy one without some kind of CVT warranty.
I would prefer to buy a 6 speed manual HRV, but no way to find one of these in my area.

Here are more of my thoughts on HRV CVT warranty:

Wife's 2016 HRV at 98,000mi last December lost the CVT like everyone else here....

We were 8 months over the 7 years....

Our local dealership talked Honda into covering 90% of a brand new transmission despite being out of any coverage period.

I can't say enough good about Justin at Great Lakes Honda in Akron, Ohio. Grateful doesn't even begin to describe how well he did with the transmission repair. It was a real Christmas gift.
