After-Market Navi?

I have an HRV-EX. I didn't get the EX-L because I wasn't interested in leather or roof rails. But I would have liked the Navi system. Is it possible to add the Navi to my EX?

EX-L Navi Software on EX

I just bough the EX a week ago; it has built in GPS and the head unit is identical to the head unit in the EX-L with exception to an SD card.

as a software engineer, I'm considering obtaining the SD card from an EX-L, cloning it, and loading it onto the SD card in my EX.

Allegedly, although not confirmed, we can't just buy the replacement SD as the unit is married to the SD card. I don't see how this is possible, but if indeed it is, then cloning the software onto the original SD should suffice.

Next steps are:
a) an EX-L member lends us their SD card temporarily
or
b) we chip in and buy the SD card from the EX-L.

If we chip-in to buy the SD card it's "more legal" than one person buying it and then selling copies to other members to spilt the cost.

Just a thought, let me know what you guys think. Cloning the card is a straight forward process.

This is the part assembly for the EX-L:

Started new thread on this specific topic; disregard as this is not after market navi related...

Just FYI if you swap heads with a used OEM unit (like the one on ebay), you'll likely need an unlock code. If the seller doesn't provide one, be prepared to possibly end up with an expensive paperweight.

While I don't own an HRV yet, I spent enough time playing around with an EX-L when I was having the oil changed in my Accord. It looks like the same slow as molasses and poorly thought out interface as the OEM one made by Johnson Controls that plagues my 9th gen Accord. If you're really hot on upgrading the stock oem unit in an HRV, just ditch it for an aftermarket one like a pioneer: (links still disabled for me, google Pioneer + Carplay)

+ It's a double din opening, new one will slide right in.
+ Can finally enjoy true carplay/android auto
+ The sound quality will be light years better
+ The navigation will be light years better than oem
+ A faster and way more well thought out interface
+ Can disable the annoying legal screens
+ You can likely sell your old on ebay and recoup 50-80% of your cost

- No canbus integration means you'll loose the ability to set some car specific options or fuel economy that are in the OEM menus

As some one who's had to put up with the slow and buggy interface for 2 years now, the positives far outweigh the negatives and I'd switch out the head in my Accord in a heartbeat if it were possible (stupid non standard size dual screen setup).

I can't seem to edit my post in this forum so I'll make this quick addendum:

Looking at that unit on ebay you'll see a model number of NVF-8538ZH. Since I still can't post links, Google "NVF-8538ZH wifi". It should be the first hit, a link to a PDF where this unit has been certified for various types of wifi interfaces including wifi direct. I suspect the wifi radio is probably disabled by the Honda firmware, but it looks like these units were made with the intent of optionally supporting Carplay.

I am also interested in having navi in my HRV. I was at the dealership today after a few months of reading forums and trying various device connection methods. I hate wires snaking around the cabin and try to avoid it at all costs. The guy at the parts desk looked up the stock radio for the EXL w/navi model and the price was around 3800 sans labor. He also stated that it may not work due to serial numbers on EXL units "pairing" with EXL vehicles and vice versa. There may be more costs for equipment for GPS antennas, etc. I wondered about that because in service menus, I can view satellite signal strength. I don't have any info if the vehicle is equipped with the necessary wiring and hardware but the unit doesn't have the "right software" and wiring inputs/sd card. Price seems steep to me. I would just deal with it if my galaxy s6 edge+ would connect with mirrorlink but honda doesn't play nice with android users. I asked about a trade in for a new EXL and the cost difference came to around $4800 all said and done. Almost worth it to just get a new one. Has anyone tried ordering an EXL head unit from honda and having it installed into their EX?

There's got to be better alternatives ...

The Sony XNV-770BT I installed in my Prius several years ago was already set up for the rear camera ... no problem.

But have no idea about HR-V's right mirror camera ...

I have tried all of that. My phone will make calls/get texts and stream music just fine over bluetooth. If I plug it in, HondaLink activates and then says device not compatible leaving my phone screen black until I unplug it. I have tried MirrorLink as well, but my Phone has 1.1 and HRV has 1.0. not backwards compatible? So I do not have access to the gps apps that work on IPhone nor will my phone display any GPS app or Google maps, etc. So I fear swapping HU's is my only option.

I am thinking of either the Pioneer or Kenwood system.
They both have a double din that has Android auto and Apple car play.
Actually I think there are several models.

What would I loose? Most likely the side cam. I am guessing no hdmi.

I believe they both have hook up for rear cam.

Maybe I should start another thread for this option for navigation?

I want google maps so I am looking at this for Android.

"Video Switchers" may offer a solution to the side vs rear cam.

Remind me ... why does one want HDMI in their vehicle?

Of course for as little as $15 you could mount a dedicated lcd screen ... camera on the vent to the left of the factory double DIN ... iPhone mounted on the right ...
At $15, little screens all across your dashboard ... monitor everything, all the time :)

What vent mount holders work well with the HR-V vents to hold a phone?
I think it is a good idea for now!
Pics?
Thank you in advance.

I bought a Garmin and have it dash mounted above the vent between the steering wheel and the radio. It's out of the way, easy to reach, and doesn't obstruct my vision out of the front window. It's a MUCH cheaper alternative than trying to tie everything into the touch screen. It's only one cord and it's not in the way at all. I know you guys are trying to have one screen do it all, but at a cost of less than $100, it's great!

I have tried the MHL plug.. device still not supported. I just don't know what avenue to venture on to next! I bought a 14 dollar one off of amazon and a 40 dollar one from radio shack. Both did not work. Plugged in a Galaxy S5 and it worked SEAMLESSLY! (with Sygic Navi App) All I want is to be able to stream Spotify (which I can already do via bluetooth) along with using Google Maps (preferably) Sygic will do if that's the case. I just don't understand why a car that is "newer" than my galaxy s6 edge+ won't connect to it, but it will connect to the regular s6, the s5, etc.

Forgot Crutchfield actually has that feature.
It came down too 3 for me with Android auto, 2 din, second camera all Pioneer. I do not understand why it could not be wired into a auxiliary camera in the Kenwoods though?
Really so little info on this stuff. I hate too loose a feature. Wonder if there is a wire harness adapter?
cool thanks for that!

I have searched but things change. A new better unit may be out there since the last thread or there may be some new people with some additional advice on the message board now. I have actually searched several sites.. The more opinions I get the better.

Folks ... again, I have to apologize ... we ain't got no HR-V :(

We don't know nuthin' about nuthin'

Dealer gave us a VIN and said early February ... IF we'll settle for an EX.

No promises if we hold out for an EX-L.
What to do? What to do?

I'm using a Spigen Stealth Car Mount for my phone. It sits on the dash (attached by gel pad) right above the head unit, and works perfectly.

I bought the premium version of Sygic Car Navigation to use with my Galaxy Note 4, and it works well through Mirrorlink, but the map in my area isn't fully updated. It's actually just easier to use Google Maps because I don't have to connect the phone by USB in order to use Mirrorlink. That, and I can get voice direction from Google Maps and stream music from my phone at the same time via the bluetooth connection easily.

I like that does it come off the dash easily? How does the gel pad work?

I do not want something to leave glue or residue or wreck the dash.

It does not hold it vertical though right.

how could honda do something this dumb

aprt from no Nav - you have to go through all the nonsense of upgrading the maps

I have a Kenwood head unit and guess what - it is extremely difficult to get maps as it goes through Kenwood web site and they have done an upgrade for many years so maps are obsolete

I fear the same with honda

an Android head unit may be best
