That is very surprising. Is it because a lack of room to put the flat wheel/tire under the trunk mat? As in, the space is taken up by the rear diff, whereas on FWD models the full size wheel does fit under the carpet?

That must be the reason for it if the FWD doesn’t have it, mine is AWD.

The threaded eye is for when the car needs towing.

One of the spaces, I believe is for a screwdriver. My wife's VW Golf came with a reversible one, that had a Philips point on one end, and a flat blade on the other.

 

Interesting. I think mine is still in the bumper. There's a small eyebolt below the bumper in the rear that I've wondered about. I'm guessing it's this. Now, I'll have to open the spare tire compartment and see if it's there or not.

Perhaps the empty spaces are for our use? I know my long gone father would've hidden his cigarettes in there, so Mom wouldn't catch him smoking.
