Flashing Park, Check Engine Light, (P)!, and P0498 Code

I have a 2016 EX-L + Navigation with 33,333 (<--- not a joke) miles on it. As you can tell by the mileage I don't drive it much. It had been sitting (outside) not driven for about a month when I tried to start it and it needed a jump. It started just fine (on the first try) after the jump, but then I noticed a red flashing PARK, check engine light, and the (P)! symbol illuminated.

The parking brake engages and disengages just fine. It also holds properly. I tested by engaging the parking brake, putting the car in drive, and pressing the accelerator. The car would not budge.

I hooked up my el-cheapo ODB2 reader and got the code P0498. It is a generic code defined as "evaporative emission system vent valve control circuit low". My Google research says that means the signal from the vent valve of the evaporative emission system is not present (it is low). The signal should be present (high) if it is working properly.

I have cleared the code (which clears the flashing park, check engine light, and (P)!), but it comes back very quickly. I have tried driving around for 30+ minutes with varied highway and city driving. The code does not clear.

I have seen in other posts on this forum that if you get the flashing park, check engine light, and (P)! at the same time it is low battery voltage (even if your car starts just fine) and to change the battery. I have not tried changing the battery, but here is what I have done:

  1. Filled tank. Made sure gas cap was tight (rotated until I hear a few clicks) and drove around a while.
  2. Connected the battery to my CTEK MXS 5.0 charger and let it come to a full charge.
  3. Cleared code and drove the car (flashing park, check engine light, (P)! and P0498 code came back).
  4. Had the battery checked at AutoZone. Voltage was fine, but said the battery needs a charge.
  5. Went back home and checked the water level in the battery cells (it was low), added distilled water, connected the battery, to the charger using recondition mode, let the battery come to a full charge.
  6. Cleared the code and turned the car off.
  7. Removed the negative lead from the battery, wrapped the negative lead in a towel, closed the hood (bonnet for the UK), and let the car sit like that overnight (7:30PM to 9AM).***
  8. Reattached the negative lead, started the car, and everything was normal.
  9. Drove the car to the top of my drive way, let the car sit for about an hour, got back in it to run some errands, the flashing park, check engine light, (P)! and P0498 code came back.
Has anyone seen this or has had experience with the P0498 code? I'm hesitant to purchase a new battery since the one in the car does not exhibit low voltage (Full disclosure, the battery has been in the car since I bought it in December 2018. It may be the original battery).

Furthermore, everything goes away when I clear the P0498 code. That leads me to believe it has everything to do with the code and not the battery. I've searched the forum for the P0498 code, but came up with nothing.

Also, no posts that mention the flashing park, check engine light, and (P)! mention a P0498 code. Is this something new?

Last thing: when I was running my errands in the car this morning, I noticed the "green eco ring" around the speedometer is not working.

Any suggestions?

I'm trying to avoid having to go to the stealership dealership.

***I was expecting to come back to a car where all of the settings were back at default. When I started the car I got a notification that the navigation system lost power (expected) and to hold down the power button for at least 2 seconds. Did that, and when everything came back up ALL of my settings (including paired phones) were still there. Does the HR-V have non-volatile memory? Does it have some sort of CMOS battery or similar?

The HRV, like all vehicles and all electronic devices, definitely has NVRAM for numerous devices.

The picture of your OBDII scanner shows "3/3". Are there any other DTC's?

I would install some kind of in-cabin voltmeter to confirm that your battery voltage is fine.
Eliminate that variable.

All three codes were P0498.

I didn't know my HR-V has NVRAM. Good to know.

I've already returned the memory saver I bought from Amazon.

We have 2 honda hrv bought it brand new 2017 and 2018 honda original battery is not the greatest one . We already had to replace both batteries . 2017 with 50k and 2018 with 24k . Let me tell you when u jump these cars u get all kinds of unwanted light and flashing because that happen to me no worry do not take it personal just change the dam battery and do not even cross ur finger for good luck and just drive the car for about 20-30 mile and let the magic do its job. By the way the battery work and perform best when is being put to work otherwise short life!!!!!!!!! Happy hrving

I have a 2016 @ 90,000. These lights have been showing on and off for the last 3-4 months or more. Just had it at the dealership for oil and transmission fluid change. They’re always happy to provide you with plenty of other recommendations. The lights must not have been on when I had it there. If ours are both ‘16’s, could it be an age vs a mileage

tried finding answers online and couldn’t find anything.

I bought a Duralast from Autozone for my 05 Accord years back and was experiencing weird electrical problems about 8 months into ownership...every time i took it back to them it checked out okay. Finally said screw it and bought a new different battery....no problems until sold.

If my 05 accord was acting weird due to a low volt/crappy battery I can only imagine what a new 2020+ car would do....

I have a 2018 HRV and this happened to me close to this time last year and it ended up being my O2 sensors. They tried to say it was my catalytic converter until I came back and told them I had just inspected that myself recently and had photos of it because there was some theft in my area. Suddenly it was just the senor and I asked them to just replace the malfunctioning one. It just started again today. I had the battery replaced in October. Both times it has happened have been after snow/ice/rain/extreme cold. My guess it is a sensor again. I have also noticed that my dash lights have issues if it is under 30 degrees outside. It has been that way for 3 years. They can never give me an answer why and say they can't investigate unless it is actively happening, but it stops after 10 minutes once the car is warmed up.

I had this code recently. Thought it was due to worn out gas cap. Its due to a leak in the evap system. I took it to my mechanic a few days ago and he conducted a smoke test to see where the leak was coming from. Turned out I had to replace an evap solenoid valve. Problem solved. Code is
GONE.

Yea I see it. Thank you. I’ve had issues with the air intake tube. The tube had dry rotten and I had it replaced. Later I’ve had this issue show up right after I replaced the Air intake tube but I forgot to plug in the cable that goes into this evap solenoid. I had reset the codes back then and had no issues with jt until today. I’ll replace the valve next and see. Thank you again.

During a mountain trip I received the same Parking and Check Engine Errors, even if I didn't have any issue with the brakes. The worst thing is after that , during all this trip, when I had big descents and I had to push hard the brake, the car cut the throttle, so after the descent was over I had to stop the car and start the engine again in order to have the full acceleration for the climbing. So I am thinking that my problem is really linked to the brakes and that the acceleration problem was an intended behaviour for forcing me to stop the car immediately.
On the highway the car went normal, without issues, but on the exit, after a hard brake, the throttle died again.
One thing that it shouldn't be related to this, but I do not know what to believe anymore, is that before the Parking Error, I tried to fold the mirrors from the door button and didn't work. After a few push/release button attempts, I had a 15 minutes stop and after I started the car again the mirrors started to fold/unfold randomly until they stopped.

Battery was replaced one year ago, so I don't think that is related to it.

Had anyone experienced something similar?

Many thanks!

my HRV is from 2017, manual, 80000 km, 1.6D
