Many of the vehicles you are comparing the HR-V to are in a larger class (CR-V, Santa Fe, Tiguan)

I suggest you add the Chevy Trax, Buick Encore, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Jeep Renegade, and Nissan Juke. I would also include the Civic because the passenger compartment are similar in size I think.

 

Good idea as these are the true direct competitors.

 

What about the Subaru Crosstrek ......... very similar size as the others plus AWD and 34 mpg. I have a '13 Crosstrek and was going to buy another to replace our '06 Civic with 188K miles. I decided to wait to see the HR V but if the size or price isn't right I'm going to the Subaru dealer. I got $2500 off $24,499 MSRP in '13 and believe I can do just as well on a '15.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not familiar with the "EL" listed in your table, which brand is that? It's just not ringing a bell right now.

I started a spreadsheet comparing HR-V dimensions to other cars, because I really didn't have a sense of just how big / small a car it is. I kept adding cars...

Going to have to add the Mazda CX-3, unfortunately they haven't released some specs yet (weight and clearance for instance)

 

Also, you have a question-mark for the ground clearance of the HR-V. According to this drawing of the Vezel, it should be about 7.28 inches (185mm).

 

I found some Vezel info and it showed the ground clearance as 7.3" for the FWD and 6.7" for the AWD. From what I could see and figure out it appears both are the same height above the ground but the AWD has a differential that hangs down reducing the ground clearance.

Wow... thanks for the responses, folks. I'm in the middle of a major flooring project, so not a lot of time right now. If I get a chance I'll share the spreadsheet somewhere for others to use however they choose. Many of the cars you ask about are indeed direct competitors, but I didn't compile the spreadsheet mostly for direct comparison with the competition... I've been around long enough to know rational analysis isn't how I choose cars. It's all in the gut.

I was actually just picking some common cars I see often, or have had an interest in, in order to get a sense of the external size of the HR-V, so it's kind of an eclectic selection. Also I have a very old, strong, probably unreasonable bias against American brands, I don't tend to pay any attention to them, so they're not on the sheet.

Oh, the EL is my current car, a 2003 Acura El 1.7. It was a Canada-only Acurized Civic sedan.

Perry, great information! When you can, the following comparison would be ideal given they are direct competitors:

Buick Encore
Chevy Trax
Jeep Renegade
Nissan Juke
Subaru Crosstrek
(soon to be announced Ford and Toyota models)

Look for numerous comparisons on these models in the coming months and year.

 

Ford has ststed a couple of times (that I have seen in articles) that they have no interest in bringing the Ecosport to the US. I believe they will eventually change their mind, and it won't take them long to modify the Ecosport to met US laws. I have not seen anything from TOYOTA regarding if they plan on entering this segment.

 

Look for the Ecosport sooner than later. As for Toyota, no images have been show, but it has been widely documented that both are moving forward. Both are a given with the price of the RAV4 and Escape.

This class of vehicles will be exploding in the next year and those without an available model will miss out.

Still amazed at the clearance on the Subaru Crosstrek compared to the others. I bet the drivers in Boston would appreciate that this year .

 

We've had drifting white stuff on the roads here lately too, but the cherry blossoms are almost done for the year...

Ground clearance is not something I need, except that my currrent car and prior civics have always driven me nuts with the low front skirt that scrapes on every curb and parking barrier. It'll be nice to drive into a parking spot until the tires hit for a change.
