What is that sensor behind the rearview mirror?

So my work parking lot is requiring that we put a new transponder device onto the back of the rearview mirror in order to open the gate. When I went to install it, I noticed what looks like a sensor behind it on the driver's side. Anyone know what this is?

I have the EX-L with auto dimming mirror. I know the sensor for the auto dimming is on the front (rear facing) side, along with the on/off button for it and a light indicator. The sensor being on the front side makes sense as that is where the light is coming from (behind the car) that it used to determine if dimming is required. But is it possible it uses a second sensor on the back (forward facing) side too?

I also thought maybe this was the sensor for the ambient light that dims the display for night or tunnel driving, but when testing it by covering it with my hand nothing happened.

Basically what is it that I would be blocking if I put the parking transponder over top of it?
