Fuel Gauge goes in and out

38072 Views 99 Replies 40 Participants Last post by  Passerby
Anyone else have a fuel gauge / odometer that goes in and out? When it's been cooler outside mine has been showing jibberish in the past, now it just plain doesn't show up until my car is warmed up. It has been suggested to me that it's a communication problem. Any ideas on how to fix? I'd rather not pay the dealership to troubleshoot and I'm not under warranty any longer.

I have the same issue. 2016 HRV. It's been happening for almost a year. They said they needed to replace the Cluster for $1300.00. Needless to say I have been "Dealing" with it... It only happens after it rains or is really humid. I am hoping for a Warranty to come through on it instead of paying for it. I think flooding them with complaints might help.
i hear ya... mines a lease with only 8600 miles. if i knew the cost, i would have said "No" and waited for the lottery to hit. mine did it on sunny cool morning a few weeks back, thats when i called the dealership and emailed pics

Did they charge you for the repair? If so, how much? Let us know if that did the trick or not.
No charge--Under warranty and i am leasing. Only 8600 miles 2019 Model

so far after a few days its good. But, it wasn't constantly doing it and when it did happen it was for a short time. less than a hour. only happened on 4 different days since november 2020

I am having the same issue in my 2016 honda hrv ex fwd. I noticed mine was doing that and I started to push on plastic to see if it would correct it, and it went back to normal. It has been doing it for months with mine now and I still have not figured out what is causing it. I just push on the display every time and it fixes it for the moment. So it leads me to believe it is a connection issue. I ended up taking the odometer part out to try and see if I could figure it out on my own but it would need to completely dismantled to really see anything. I am going to take mine apart soon and get some pictures.

Although I’ve never tried pushing on it, mine seems to do it only when it’s cold weather and sometimes if I put the defroster fan on, it may snap out of it. I’m thinking if condensation/frost gets inside, maybe that’s why the warmth of the fan corrects the connection, but wth do I know? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh gotcha. Yeah mine has been doing it morning, night, cold, hot, and just almost everything I turn on my car. All I do is push on the plastic on the left or yhe right and it corrects itself. That's why it makes me believe it is a connection issue.
I was also having issues with the push to start button to the point where it was showing the indicator on my dash and it would take me 10 to 15 times pushing the button before it would start. They said it was under warranty but because my car is a rebuilt title, they said it wasn't covered, and it was 115 dollars for the part and like 50 dollars for labor. At that point I was like what could I lose. I ended up unclipping the push to start mechanism, (which is done in like 20 seconds) and taking it apart. Come to find out it just got a little dirty and the contacts of the metal weren't properly touching. I cleaned those off with alcohol put it back together and the light went off on the dash and the button works flawlessly.
Vehicles are the worst! Haha

Kinda funny about the Push To Start Button, I’ve heard many people saying they’ve had issues with it and although it’s not considered a recall, they’ve been getting notices to bring it in to the dealership for “software updates”! That’s what they’re trying to say about this issue too but no notices yet. I did recently get a notice for the CVT software update. Now I just have to find alternate transportation for a day since they say we should prepare to leave it. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Haha yeah I don't understand how a 'software update' fixes a mechanical issue. It seems like it needs a "hardware update". I'm going try and investigate the fuel gauge issue on my own though and give it my own update Haha.

Yeah, I think that’s just what they do so they don’t have to issue a recall. Keep us updated on what works & what doesn’t, ok? 👍🏻

Oh seriously! OK for sure I will post as soon as I can figure something out.

Alright so I took my odometer cluster all the way out of my car and disassembled it as far as I could. I saw a couple spit that were dirty and cleaned those. I ended up loosening all the screws and retightening them clean some other connection points with alcohol and cotton swabs and put it all back together and I have not had any issues as of right now. It has been really hot and it has also rained and has been humid. It was happening pretty regularly of me getting in the car and it was about 2 or 3 times a day it would get all digitized. As for now it is working great.

Good job! Let us know if it ever comes back. I know someone else had posted that they asked the dealership about it and they suggest replacing the whole cluster which was big bucks (although everything is big bucks to me). You’re lucky that you have the knowledge, tools and ability to do these types of repairs yourself.

Nice work! And thanks much for the update and images. I don't have this problem... hopefully it doesn't develop. But if I do I'll have a starting point.
Oh yeah no problem! Honestly car places and dealerships make it sound way more difficult that it actually is. All it took was a Phillips screwdriver and four screws to take the whole cluster out and the plastic surrounding it just pops right off then the cluster only had a couple screws too and that was all. I guess in my case I'm out of a warranty period because of my title so I didn't mind trying to figure it out. But I will let you know if it comes back ever thanks!

I just wanted to update on this problem. It has been just a little under 2 weeks since I fixed the issue and I have still not had any issues with this! Hopefully it helped it for good!

Ok I hate to add to this but here we go. I have a 2016 hrv with 85,000 miles on it. Had the same cluster issue as everyone here. Had dealer replace cluster under warranty about 8 months ago and issue went away. Drove to work this morning and it showed up again. I'm still sticking with bad connection as a possible cause. Hopefully I can get dealer to stick to the Honda OEM parts warranty of 12 months to replace it again. Side note I have the start/stop issue as well, fun stuff haha.

I really think that it is a faulty connection or it gets dirty. Because my start stop button was almost not working at all and I took it apart and just cleaned the dirt out and that is all it took. I still have not had any issues with my odometer either so I really think it just gets dirty or a loose connection.
I've had this issue within the past year too in my 2016 with 118,000 kms in Canada. Only happens when it's cold out. If I press on the trip meter toggle stalk button a few times it comes back. It's pretty annoying. It's a safety issue in my mind if you don't know how much fuel you have, in line with faulty seatbelts, so I feel like Honda should not be charging customers if it's a defect. Sometimes, some OEMs will install the same defective parts to "buy time" to find a better solution, like what Ford was doing when their Ford Focus transmissions were bad.
