You see my dilemma... but the large difference is mostly because they're not equipped identically. The AWD and CVT add $3600, which brings them closer, and the step up to the EX-L is another $3200, which is ridiculous imo. They seem to justify it because we get the Forward Collision and Lane Departure warnings, which I don't care about... though roof rails would be nice!

hrv4me, the costco canada auto site says "there are currently no vehicle offers available". I'm guessing it may not exist here... though they do have the site.

I guess Honda figures they are already giving you all those extra goodies to you Canadians, and so they don't want to give you an even better deal through Costco. ;)

I wish we had your EX-L version!

I talked to Costco yesterday regarding their auto buying program. Closest Honda dealer they deal with is down in VA. :( Closest Subaru dealer is in Silver Spring, MD, which is well over an hour drive. That is the only Subaru dealer they deal with in the state of MD. I am planning on calling them back and asking what dealers they deal with in PA, as I am less than an hour from PA.

Still have not made my final decision as to which one, but am planning on driving the Crosstrek on the same route that I drove the HR-V on last week. Lots of needed surface repairs on the road and lots of curves.

Keep in mind generally there is one Costco authorized dealership per area so that may end up being close or far from you.

Sounds like for your purposes/interest, the Crosstrek might work best. $500 Below Invoice on the Crosstrek through Costco is hard to beat.

Don't let Costco factor into your decision. They offer a "haggle free" price, and I have found that you can get the same deal, and usually better, without them. And, I've bought plenty of cars both ways to back up my claim:crying:

Good idea cause given the limited availability of the HRV, most areas right now Costco is not valid for this vehicle.

This is typical of most new vehicles.

Yes, HRVs are almost non existent right now in the Seattle area. And, Crosstreks in the Limited version with nav/eyesight are hard to find also. Many people order just the Crosstrek they want and have about an 8 week wait.

But, once you make up your mind you can cast your net and have fun with the hunt. There is just something exciting about tracking down the car you want. :nerd:

Neither the HR-V or Crosstrek is available in the trim/color I want. I did find one dealer in MD advertising the HR-V at invoice, and I confirmed the price with them. TrueCar shows the Crosstrek selling for about $1500 less than MSRP.

TrueCar is a good start, but I find their prices higher than you need to pay. This high volume dealer up here in the PNW is known for "bottom line pricing" and I bought my Limited for more below MSRP than they show on their site (I didn't buy from them.):

Definitely true.

Good to hear you guys still engaging in dialogue relating to the HRV and competitors. Too many other threads have just transition to generic buyers who are looking at anything and everything as the discussions convey. ;)

Sounds about right! Goes to show both vehicles are in strong demand.

Again, I just wish there were other options as competition is good, but Ford, Hyundai, and Toyota are so far sitting it out.

My assumption is there are many lurkers who do their research by compulsively reading the forums. I know I always have when making my buying decisions.

Good, honest debate about the pros and cons of the various competitors lend perspective and baseline data. I find no value in posts that simply dismiss the competition because saying something "bad" about an HR-V (since this is the HR-V forum) or other Hondas somehow undermines the owner's/potential owner's choice.

I love the choices we have in America. I spent 16 years during the Cold War in Berlin, Germany. East Germans considered themselves fortunate to own a Trabant, with its 600cc smoking engine. These are collector items to mod now, but back in during the Soviet occupation they were what was available to East Germans. They were dreadful little pollutants.

Perspective is everything.:)

This forum helped me decide that I did not want the HRV after my test drive and also helped me look at "anything and everything" else, just to give me ideas! Amazing how I felt trust in a couple of people's opinions to help me decide on a great vehicle.

Absolutely agree! Honest, respectful debate, differing perspectives and opinions, are rich resources for those with important and costly decisions to make. And those willing to listen, to consider and seek to understand opposing viewpoints, those with the courage to honestly disagree and the heart to respect and acknowledge another's opinion, are the best (dare I say) friends anyone can hope for. I'm truly grateful for the two of you, and many others on these forums.

Besides, we have a hoot!!

Oh, yes! I teach 8th graders, and one of my most important goals is to encourage a healthy and respectful dialogue in the classroom. My students, at the end of the year, always tell me they learned how to listen to others' ideas and perspectives and to be more self-confident of their own after listening and exploring. Those are rare and worthy qualities, and the basis of both our countries' continuing democracies!:D

Today I finally drove the HRV for the first time. It was a short ride in a white LX CVT... the only car my local dealer has on the line, for now, and much in demand for drives. (I did see an MSM EX-L, already sold and prepped for pickup... didn't get to sit in it, but got a good look at the colour, which I really liked.) My wife and I had some interesting reactions, good and bad.

The bottom line is this: while we liked the HR-V and didn't find anything to hate, there were lots of little niggles that added up to to a less than compelling package. Seat comfort, passenger footwell, engine noise, CVT, all-touch interface, interior finish were all disappointing, for us. Cabin noise at cruise, general handling, visibility, size and ride height, fit and finish (mostly, but not always material choice) were all impressive.

Afterwards, after much discussion over a good pub meal on a sunny seaside deck, our current front-runner by a good margin is... (drum roll please)... the Crosstrek. XV. Whatever... the Subie. All subject to another good look and a longer (i.e. overnight) test drive to confirm our initial impressions. We'll also probably drive a manual HR-V when one's available, although most of our disappointments with the HR-V would still be there even if the manual was an exceptional driving experience.

This doesn't mean I'm entirely out of the HR-V camp, but definitely leaning another direction, for now. I can still fully appreciate the appeal of the HR-V... it's a great size, well equipped, at a good price point, by an excellent brand that's had my loyalty for 30-odd years. But in the end, I'm not convinced that there aren't better options out there, at least if you have the means to pay a little more or look at a different class of vehicle (like CR-V / CX-5, or iM, or Golf, or Soul, or ???). If I end up going Subie, I know I'll miss things like lane watch and magic seats that are Honda-only easter eggs.

Sorry this wasn't as long and detailed a review as my Crosstrek thread. Perhaps I'm just not as inspired... which should tell me something. (I think Gruenie's known all along...)
