2016 Honda HR-V EX
  • Symptoms:

  • All dashboard lights come on and blink with a clicking sound
  • Parking brake will not disengage
  • Accessories and lights work
  • No problems with keyfob
  • No corrosion on battery terminals
  • Nothing left on (lights, accessories) when parked the previous day

Resolution:
  • Battery replacement

Battery died after 1 year, 9 months, just under 18,000 miles.
Note: A friend with an HR-V (on the road for 2 years) had the exact same issue a couple of weeks ago.

Prior to the battery needing replacement, there was no indication that it was about to die. In all my previous cars I had either a voltage indicator on the dashboard or I could tell the battery was dying from slow cranks. No indication on this car. I would think with all the electronics there would be a voltage indicator/meter. Nope. And what's the point of having a battery indicator light? It didn't light up to indicate the battery wasn't charging. Useless this time.

I've lived in South Florida for 21 years and have become used to changing car batteries around every 2.5 - 3 years. At 1 year and 9 months, this set an all-time record for me.

The good: The battery was under warranty, no charge to replace at the dealership
The bad: Horrible battery life & horrible Honda roadside assistance. Called at 9:15 AM, on hold for 15 minutes before hanging up. Went online to register for service - took 2.5 hours for any type of acknowledgment. By that time I had already received a jump from a friend and was at the dealer. I have roadside assistance via my auto insurance also, but a good friend is always more reliable ;)

Anyway, I hope this helps anyone with the same symptoms. All it may need is a jump start and a new battery.

Original battery still going strong in my 2016 at 55,000 miles. Though my commute consists of 2 miles of town to get to the freeway, some 45-50 miles of freeway (where I leave it in 6th gear the whole time), and 2 miles of town to get to work. Two engine starts a day, unless I decide to stop somewhere on the way back. I have a load tester that's been temporarily misplaced in the depths of my roll cab. Will have to try it on the HR-V some time.
I had to go to the dealership a few weeks back due to the right-rear door failing to lock, again. During their testing of the locking, the battery died. Luckily it died in their care so they went ahead and replaced it. The car is just under 3 years old with 46000 miles and is always garage kept so it isn't out in the elements. I really do think Honda just uses crap batteries for their vehicles. My 09 Jetta that IS out in the elements all the time ran the original battery up until last year.

Glad this post was at the top of recent discussions! This morning I had this exact clicking sounds/blinking of lights, and I had to get the car jumped. Bought the car almost exactly 3 years ago...! Will be stopping at a store after work for a new battery (if I can start it! :D )

so I had the same issue, pressed the button, all the lights came on, radio was on, but the engine won't start. AAA came to jump start, the guy said battery should be good, but the connection looks corroded. He used a metal brush the clean off the corrosion, jump started the car, drove around 20 miles to the dealer for a check up, dealer say the battery is going strong.... So don't need to buy a new battery if you can get someone to help you do a good cleaning of the battery connectors...

Same issue here however Advance is giving me grief about replacing battery that's only 1.5 years old ?
Purchased new starter yesterday and mechanic put in it
$300.00 later it's the battery even when they're saying it's not my battery

It's not the battery itself, it's the battery connector getting corroided. All you need to do is to clean the connector with a wire brush! it's a $30 job!
Ground wires/ cables in mine are fine. No corrosion. After Advance charged my during battery, it now says check charging system ?
My volts are only reading 12v even when started
My volts are only reading 12v even when started
Have they tested your alternator?
Advance would not test it
Said Alternator has to be out of motor to test it.... ?
Needles to say, took to a different Advance where they're checking the whole charging system as I type..

i just went through that too. but at over 60k. but yes no warning omg. but they told me that if there had been a battery shaped light, that it would have been an indicator the alternator is not charging it.
i just went through that too. but at over 60k. but yes no warning omg. but they told me that if there had been a battery shaped light, that it would have been an indicator the alternator is not charging it. they also told me that all the dashboard fireworks is what it would do anytime you try to start the car without the key. i never try to start it without a key so i did not know that. so basically its the fireworks show because the car cannot be started for whatever reason.
We just had the exact same problem with our 3 month old 2018. Road Assistance gave us a jump start and we drove it 3 miles to the Honda dealer and the existing battery tested as good as a brand new one. We did have a little difficulty getting the emergency brake to disengage. The brake was not set by us when we parked the car. It engaged itself on trying to start the car. No positive solution as yet.
what did you do to get the emergency brake to disengage? We have this issue right now!

Electric parking brakes are lame just for this reason.

The easiest way to disengage the HRV electric parking brake, if the battery is dead, is to somehow get 12V to the battery.
Either via jumper cables connected to another vehicle, if you can get them to reach depending on where the car is stranded, or a battery jumper pack of some kind.

The owners manual states to call a tow truck.
I’ve had the 2017 HRV for 3 years. While in the car this morning to go to work, the power steering seemed to stop working, all lights on dash lit up, the radio turned off, and the car began to sputter and die. I pulled it into a parking spot and after all of your helpful stories, am hopeful it is only the battery. Thanks for the help !

It will be the third battery replacement come May2023 in my 2016HRV , just after 2 years each - they faithfully die suddenly. The first one ( Stock FB) was measured at 1/3 life remaining and i ignored it . The second one ( Motolite Gold) though i had a plugin battery status checker - the battery went suddenly one morning . Come May i will replace ( Motolite EXCEL) earlier maybe April :) with an AMARON HiLife - India Technology .

Bi-weekly I topup the charge overnite using a Smart Charger . I also invested in a Battery Analyzer lets me know the Battery Health and State of Charge - could be 100% Healthy but if the charge is almost down to 50% this accelerates battery degradation .

Hello! I recently bought a 2nd hand HR-V and put it in the yard. It's been pretty cold the last few days outside. I did not drive the car since then, so it was just doing nothing for 10 days. And now I have almost all the lights flashing, and it is not starting.

Small note: we were driving the car 2 days before the purchase, and everything was fine. The battery was replaced recently, as the previous owner said, and the most recent service was made in October. The most peculiar thing was that it was just standing in the parking lot.

Symptoms:
  • Cannot disengage the parking brake
  • The car does not start
  • The car lights blink when changing driving modes (P/R/D/N/S)
  • The infotainment screen turns off when I try to disengage the parking brake. It can turn on only after pushing the start/stop button again
  • Sometimes, even just the lights on the ceiling blink when I try to disengage the brakes

Here is the screen with the warning lights that was captured two days ago. There were not so many of them 😂 Again, the car was just standing in the parking lot since the purchase.

If you haven't already done so, get the battery boosted- it should start and verify that the battery is actually good. Search this forum and you'll find many threads about battery drain when the car is left parked for extended periods in the cold.
