Hello everyone, so I know many of you have been looking to add apple carplay to the 2016-2018 HRV's. Since honda won't update our current radios. Well I finally found the solution and I literally only spent under $200. So the 2013-2015 Honda CRV EX radio actually fits our models and back when Apple carplay came out honda was testing it on certain customer's headunits with an update usb. So I found this guy who sells the update for the honda crv radio that enables the apple carplay on the CRV radio so after doing some research, the radio for the CRV actually uses the same plugs. So i went ahead and bought a 2015 Honda CRV EX radio on ebay for $100, and a aftermarket radio install kit for the hrv on amazon for $12. I reached out to the ebay guy who mailed me the software update for the radio for only $49. I took off my radio from my HRV installed the CRV radio, its actually plug and play no need to do any splicing. Turned on the radio and plugged in the update stick and thats it! I now have apple carplay on Honda's radio. View attachment 30341 View attachment 30342
How can I get the software?

I bought this one today but they say they have 10+. I also talked them down to $125 so you may want to try that. This is the correct one.

I've been following this thread for a while and bought this unit, it arrived and when I went to install it, I wasn't able to get any sound out of it. I am replacing my 2016 CR-V touring head unit with a head unit without nav, so that I can get CarPlay in my vehicle. When hooking up this unit, there were two extra plugs that now are not plugged into anything. Is it possible one of these free cables is the audio issue?

I'm not super knowledgeable about cars but I am pretty tech savvy and able to problem solve, I just don't want to mess around too much and risk having a real problem on my hands. I attached the photo of the two cables that are currently not plugged into anything.

I saw that you got this unit for your wifes H-RV, did you have any luck with it? Thanks for any help you can provide!

There is some bad / wrong information in this thread. I have purchased three different models of the "same" head unit, and only the third model I tried worked as advertised. There are a couple different criteria to consider before you buy. Are you able to post a picture of the back of your existing head unit? I can help you figure out what to look for.

He even let it go for $50. So It was a win win situation. All the settings work such as lane watch camera, backup camera. Literally is like honda use the same radio with different screen lol. I was going to try and see if I could swap out the screen but I didn't get too far, maybe will try over the weekend to see if that works.
Have you tried swapping out the screen yet?

I am in the same boat as you. I purchased and received a unit with these same plugs. From what I can tell these came out of the EX-L and up trims on the CRV-s which have a 7 speaker amplified audio system with an external amplifier. In other words there is no amplifier in this unit, it is pre-amp only and doesnt have enough power to drive the speakers. The unit to look for I believe came out of the EX trim models with the 6 speaker setup, and without navigation. The other way to tell is the one we need only has 9 plugs on the back, and is missing the 8 pin plug that is circled on the bottom row in this picture. I am going to try to find another one and see if it works. Let us know if you figure something out

Would you share us some details about the programmer and should I buy Touring model for CRV?

Hello been following this thread and ran into an issue. This bezel Amazon, that @RockerDOC said he used, I bought it and it does not fit the width of the CRV head unit. Just wondering if it did for others without modification and I got a defective one? Thanks! (Dimensions of radio opening I need are 7x4 inches and the bezel is less than 7)

Are you looking for an ex without the encircled plug? Did you buy yours off ebay the new ones not paired or from an existing crv?

That bezel that I bought from Amazon required approximately an hour's worth of filing down the sides with a drill bit. I'm sure there was a better and safer way of doing it, but I eventually got it to fit!

Yes you need the headunit without the circled plug. The problem is both headunits have the same part number so it’s a gamble as to which one you get.
I think the safest bet is to physically obtain one from a junkyard just to double-check that the ports are correct. Plus, you'll definitely know that those have been previously "activated". If you buy a "never-before-used" one, you'll run into some activation problems that I personally couldn't get through.

Otherwise, if you are going to get one from EBay or Craigslist, then ask the seller for actual pictures of the actual product being sold. Too many on EBay recycle the pictures thinking that all of the head units are the same.
