third attempt after the flowable silicon and silicon sealant on the Spoiler and rear glass -did not totally fix it , i put silicon sealant at the lower end of the rubber flap material , looks like water is clinging on and making its way to the middle part of the garnish . Put additional sealant as in attached picture . So far no water makes its way to the inside of the weather strip.

Just noticed your ad,its the hose in the hatch for your rear washer fluid, hose --its not connected.
Our dealership told us that the water sloshing in our rear hatch door was caused by a seam seal that failed. Terribly disappointed in the way it was handled. Hopefully there will a recall based on manufacturer defect and we will be recompensated.
I’m having the same problem! Wondering what to do.

So here is the reason the HRV rear hatch leaks excluding damage and other things that would make checking the tail lights or removing the spoiler a consideration. I did all that myself as well with no success. It’s the windshield wiper motor. The shaft goes through a gromet in the rear glass. $32 from honda. Not difficult to replace since we have had everything apart already. The wiper shaft wears out the grommet which on the outside of the window forms a cup shape. This holds water when it rains. It then runs down the wiper motor shaft into tie hatch. Water Builds up in the hatch lock latch on the floor and runs into the spare tire well. This gromet has no lubrication at all and actually corroded the wiper motor shaft. I steel wooled it clean. Put dielectric grease on shaft and grommet. No more leaks since. Hope this helps
Hey, do you have the part number for the rubber grommet? I can't seem to find. Much appreciated.

Have not pulled the trigger yet but these leak stories have got me a bit worried. Do we know if the sunroof drain and other leaks are prevalent in the 2019+ refresh models? Any patterns here?
Wouldn't worry too much. Wife has a 2022 HRV, no accidents, brand new. No water leaks. Some of the water leaks are a result of rear ends (my case) and others are due to parking under really sappy trees that cause the drains to get clogged. You might have this problem with other SUVs too. Just use good judgement and wash the car normally and keep it neat, it should be fine.

So you're thinking in this case - buy the car and clear out the sunroof and whatever other drains; clean upholstery. Is there another cause for this? If it's just that (clogged drains), I'm not worried. If there is a real defect elsewhere - more worried.

My 2017 never had this problem before and it's been through plenty of heavy rains over the last 7 years. We had some rain yesterday-- it wasn't even that heavy but it did rain all day-- and now the lift gate is full of water. It was heavy to lift up but when I got it up, it did start to drain a little from somewhere at the bottom of the hatch, then when I pushed the hatch up further it all sloshed to the top and started coming out of the interior vents inside in the back. Needless to day I didn't push it up again! This is a brand new problem on a 7 year old HRV so I'm guessing something must be corroded or weakened or gone bad. I'm going to try draining with the plugs as suggested here and I guess I'll keep an eye on it and take it in if it happens again.
I have to say, I'm been a Honda owner for decades, my last Honda being a 2001 CR-V which I absolutely loved and never gave me a problem of any kind in the 16 years I had before I bought this one, but this newer HRV isn't so great. I can't tell you how many times I took it to the dealer in the first 2 years because the hatch would stick if I didn't open it every single day, and it would stick bad, like it was welded shut or something. They replaced everything they possibly could-- the lock, the hydraulic lift arms, some electrical parts among other things and it never fixed the problem until one day I just sprayed silicone on the rubber seals because someone here suggested it, and voila-- problem solved. But they act like they don't know what you're talking about or have never heard of your problem, but seeing the amount of people mentioning some of these problems here, I can't imagine they have no clue. It's like if they admit it, they have to do something about it. I also have paint chipping off near the back window frame and they don't want to take any responsibility for that either. They said they are only providing the repairs for that on white cars.
Seriously?? I don't know what's happening but Honda is beginning to lose favor with me, which sucks because I've always had good cars from them. :(

Has anyone had any water accumulation in the rear hatch door? When opening and closing the hatch we can hear water sloshing around. We pulled one of the panel clips loose and were able to drain off most of the water any ideas out there?
Yes. When it rain heavy the inside of the ceiling get wets. This is an on going problem and the service people cannot figure it out. I refuse to pay for a diagnostic test.

Normally it is the black rubber trim that runs along where the roof rails would sit. If you check the trim where the back of the roof meets the tailgate you may find the rubber is brittle and or lifting up, this tends to be where the water gets in.

If you find the trim is brittle, it may be of benefit to apply a rubber treatment on a regular basis to make it more supple and hopefully get it back into its original shape.

Other people have stated the water was getting into the tailgate via cracking near weld points on the tailgate itself.

I drilled holes into the bottom under the spare tire, and across the bottom of the rear hatch, the water now flows through and onto the ground, for the most part. The hatch still holds water, but it pours out when opened. That said, should've been recalled. This is crappy for trade in and resale value.

I just had this happen today for the first time on my 2016 HR-V! Is there no recall for this?
I have a 2016 HR-V as well. I ended up with a $4,200.00 repair bill for the water damage inside my car. I opened a case with Honda Corporate. That can be done online or by calling them. Unfortunately, my request for a Goodwill Reimbursement was declined due to being outside the warranty timeframe and no active campaigns for a fix.

Although it is a known issue for the 2016-2021 generation of this model, they said there are not enough cases to start a campaign with a possible fix/reimbursement. How disappointing and frustrating! They told me if enough people file cases, it may be addressed at some point. So, start a case, if possible. Then it is on file with them and they have your information if they ever reimburse for damages.

Good luck!

In the summer I removed the roof rails and cleaned them and the gutter. I also removed the rear hatch drain plugs so water could drain. During rainstorms our car alarm would trigger, and I assume it was from the water buildup in the rear hatch. We park in the garage so there aren't a lot of opportunities to test if my actions worked. I look forward to spring and some heavy rains to find out. If anyone else has the alarm problem please respond if you found the root cause and solved it.

I had both the issue of water entry into the area just inside of the rear hatch and spare tire compartment, and the issue of water in the tailgate.
First issue was fixed by removing the cover over the roof gutters, cleaning them thoroughly and patching all cracks (there were many by the tailgate) with flowable silicone.
Second issue was fixed by removing rear wiper, filling rubber bushing area with (can't recall) grease or petroleum jelly, and reinstalling.

I drilled holes across the bottom panel of the door which makes it easier to drain when it's halfway open. I also drilled holes underneath the spare tire right through the floorboard so that water just runs out.
Reading all of the other threads along this chain will inform you of what's actually going on if you're still under warranty good luck with the dealership some people have good luck some people still have leaks so is what it is. good luck.

I have a 2016 HRV and I have the same thing happening to mine. There’s water filled where the spare tire is. It’s causing rust and leaking into the feet of the backseat of my car.
Drill (or have someone drill) holes right through the bottom, I put 4 holes across the floor under the spare, doesn't actually fix anything, but allows drainage which will spare other areas any damage.

A bit late to this comment but I just had a similar problem with water collecting in the spare tire well. I checked all the usual problem spots and I too found it was caused by a bad rubber rear wiper motor seal in the hatch window. Water was coming in around the wiper shaft then running down the plastic interior hatch panel, through the latch mechanism at the bottom and into the spare tire well. I found it by removing the plastic interior hatch trim panels. As soon as I removed the lower panel, I noticed a stain trail down the inside of the panel. Wetting the area around the wiper shaft on the rear window with a garden hose confirmed the water intrusion.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
