I had a used transmission put in at 112,000 miles, now 70K later this one is leaking and Honda wants $7100 to install a new one. I filed a claim and this is the response I got, basically too bad, your problem......

Thank you for allowing Honda Automobile Customer Service the opportunity of responding to your message. We are sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with the transmission on your 2017 HR-V. We understand this is an upsetting situation and we appreciate you taking the time to inform us. The original transmission warranty is 5 years or 60,000 miles for defects, whichever ends first. A remanufactured transmission purchased from a Honda dealership would receive a 3 year or 36,000 miles warranty. If the dealer installed a used transmission, it would not receive any warranty. We reviewed this concern and verified the vehicle does not have a safety recall, warranty extension, or Product update. Unfortunately, the vehicle is currently outside of all warranties based on the high mileage and any repair cost would be at the owner's expense. We recommend visiting a Honda dealership for an inspection to confirm the needed repair. Thank you and have a good rest of your day.

Kind regards,

Honda Automobile Customer Service
I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how it feels because mine went out in March with 116,000 miles and I had to pay over $6,500 out of pocket at the dealership. How much did you have to pay for the used transmission?

Around $2500 for the used, think they went after the company that made the transmission fluid for the rest of it. Too bad it didn't make it 2 years and now that one's bad..... Honda wants $7100 for a new one now, car books out at $9K
Why wouldn’t this be part of Honda warranty extension? Seems like if you showed your receipts, you would be eligible.

Exactly since his original transmission went out at 112,000 miles.
thx4pdf's. Had issues with 2018 hrv/cvt over year ago. Took to dealer, mechanic heard the noises. Service mgr takes ride and says does not hear. I had them document visit. Asked mechanic and service mgr about repairs and they said "honda does not repair cvt's" other than software changes, drain and replace fluid, they just replace transmission if issues. So we drove off with that in mind and concerned about future performance of the drive train.

Forward now to 16JUN21 and service on hrv at honda. We had not received the cvt notification by mail yet and honda said "recall software update" performed along with scheduled service. Just received the notification today, 21JUN21, regarding the cvt issue and honda's approach to the problem(s).

So guess the option we will follow is to run vehicle and hope for the best...monitor sounds, performance as well.
Got my letter yesterday...... was this somwthing the dealer had you leave the HRV, or was it done same day etc ?

I took my HR-V to the dealer for an oil change a few days ago... and supposedly, the CVT software update. Total, just over an hour.

The thing is, the update wasn't mentioned on the paperwork... so, I'm not sure they actually did it, even though I brought it up when making the appointment and when I brought it in. I only noticed it afterwards, when I got home.

When I was making the appointment, the person on the phone made it sound like something that could be relatively quickly done... "we should be able to squeeze it in," while I wait.

Another thing... I did NOT receive a recall notice prior to taking it to the dealer... it was the dealer's website that said I needed the update when I was trying to make the appointment online. I had to cancel it and phone in because the online system gave the next avail appointment on Jul 16.

I got the letter yesterday but it was about the warranty extension, not the actual recall. I called the dealer and taking it in next Wednesday. Said it was an hour‘s job. Hour seems long but will go with it.

I received the letter on Monday and yesterday I filled out the online form for reimbursement on the new transmission that I paid for. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Honda will come through.

Keep us updated. I would be shocked (really) if Honda did not come through on this.

@Goobers - on my HRV I definitely noticed a difference in the way the car drives when the software was updated. The onramp to a highway was less than a mile from the dealership and the car stayed at a higher RPM for longer to the point that I was wondering if something was wrong. At highway speeds I can feel the car responding more quickly when I press on the gas to start a pass.

Got a letter from Honda. Transmissions will be software-updated and inspected and warranty extended to 150K miles.
Any problems found on inspection and it's a new transmission courtesy of Honda.

I just wanna say, Thank You! I came so close to buying a Subaru Crosstrek with manual. So close. And I still may, but now I'm not being 'forced' into the decision.
If I get a Subaru I can then enjoy worrying about the head gaskets. :)

Have my appointment in a few days and will get the lube changed at that time also. Mental weight lifted from my shoulders is a relief.

Just wondering, if folks after getting the recall fix, will now rely on MM for CVT changes or continue the 25k-30k changes? I get my “fix” next week.

I cannot get in to my dealer until 7/16 for this update & inspection.

I scheduled my CVT software update appointment online (Nardy Honda, St. James, NY) It's
for 8/23! I'm not driving much now (laid off from job) and don't have any
long trips planned between now and then.
I was concerned about the CVT tranny when I bought my HRV in March 2016
but I figured it had been used in the Civic for a few years so I figured it was ok.
Not very confident of taking a long trip in my HRV now :-( but I do like the vehicle
a lot, features, fuel economy, ride is fine.
No car is perfect but a tranny replacement on a Honda is troubling. I expected 150,000-200,000
miles of trouble free service (35,000 miles now) I keep up with maintenance on all my cars.
5000 mile oil changes (synthetic) tranny, rear differential fluid at 30,000 miles. Antifreeze 50,000 miles.
Brake fluid flush every 5 years or sooner. Cabin filter, Air filter every 25,000 miles etc...
I've had no issues with the HRV, rides well. Only problem I had was rear rotors rusting up, uneven
pad wear on rear brakes within 25,000 miles. I showed pictures to service manager on one visit for
service and he didn't have any comment (car was out of warranty) I replaced rotors and pads with
PowerStop parts from RockAuto, seem to be ok

So, follow up after software update on 8/23/21.
1. HRV seems slightly more sluggish starting off,
barely noticeable difference.
2. Rubber band effect seems less although I never
thought it was that bad.
3. Even though it's a CVT I've always noticed a "shift"
at around 40 mph. The "shift" seems softer now
4. Fuel economy is down a bit, maybe 3 mpg, but I've only
driven about 100 miles since update, mostly local. I did
have a highway drive yesterday, about 70 miles total and it
seems the mpg is improving.
Final note, all these observations are very subtle and may just
be my imagination :) lol
Update took a little over an hour, service department was their
normally busy early morning but they are pretty good.
I will continue to do transmission/rear diff fluid changes every
30,000 miles, Honda fluid is not that expensive and it's easy
enough to do.
Let me know what you guys/gals think.

10/18/21 follow up to my follow up :)
trans software upgrade done at 35,874 miles. I now have 37,300
and have taken one 500 mile round trip. Fuel economy is back to
normal. I guess it took some driving for the computers to relearn all
parameters. Trans is working well.

I changed the CVT fluid about a 2 years ago myself fluid looked okay - im not worried too much about things, i just read that people say the reprogramming makes CVT run better, and if Honda says the pressure is too high etc. this should help to lessen the failures people have documented on this forum.

My 2017 with just over 30,000 miles, sees a lot of city stop and go traffic - but any transmission work on any car is def major work.

I got my letter from Honda on Monday and scheduled my CVT update appointment. Since I've only owned my HRV for 1.5 years and have 13k on it, I'll see how it runs...might sell it before the 3yr/36 warranty is up.

Funny you say that, when I bought my 2016 HRV the F&I person wanted to sell me an
extended warranty. I told him if I have any problems in the first 3 years I'll just get rid of it after
the warranty is up!! lol

I just received a call from Honda and they said they were verifying with the dealership that my transmission was replaced by them. They also wanted to verify my address so they could send me my $6,500.

This is good news for other people that had to have their transmission replaced.
