I had the same model from new last year started acumulating water inside the rear door and the tire well by the buckets evry time it rains. Took the car w 3 years 38K miles to honda since is a body defect to let rain water in at 3 yrs 38K miles . Honda told me that they wanted $250.00 labor and $80 parts to star changing seals to try to determine which one was leaking. I told the dealer that in 41 years buying cars this was the first time I got a car that it was leaking so muck water after 3 yrs. I refused to fix it Honda refused to fix it. This facts indicated to me that craftmanship and materials were cheap and unreliable. Since Honda did not fix it and I was not going to fix it for the principle that is a 3 yrs old car, I traded the car.
the honda dealership said they found the problem, which appears to be the sunroof drains/pipes but it will cost me $15,000 for them to fix it and because the interior is molded from the water leak. i rarely drive which is why i am late with this issue and the water ruined the interior. they need to assess how much damage was done. but i really just need for them to fix the leak which will cost $15,000, does this make sense?

$15k to fix the interior? That seems outrageous, is your car even worth that much?

The sunroof drains are likely not damaged, they are just clogged. I'm sure somewhere in this thread someone has a link on how to clean them out with compressed air. To me that's not a manufacturing defect, other than maybe Honda could have specced larger drains.

A body shop could absolutely replace parts of your interior for cheaper. Unless you're dealing with a warranty claim that they will pay for some, I'd shop around.

Leaving any water leak, (in your car, house, cabin, outhouse, your shoes, etc), for so long that it develops into mold is not wise and has turned into a learning lesson.

I suspect the dealer gave you a US$15k estimate is because they just added up everything possible for the repair and they don't want to deal with it.

If your HRV is full of mold, then you shouldn't be inside it at all. That could be dangerous.
Fixing the leak won't help with the existing mold and the mold could still be growing in your HRV.

Depending on your insurance coverage, you could try pursuing that.

Getting other repair estimates could be challenging if you have to tow your vehicle to another shop.
You could ask the technician to go to the vehicle to check it out. Or just carefully take a ton of good quality pictures and let them view those to start the process.

Good luck..

This is exactly what happened this morning to me! Gonna be standing on the Honda dealership door in the morning.
Sadly mine is doing the same. It took me a while to figure it out. Kept thinking I left window open or spilled water. With the rain we just had, it has become so bad that I had a puddle on the passenger's side. Can't seem to figure out where it gets in. Has anyone gotten a respose from Honda?

do you have a sunroof??????
I do not have a sunroof. We have taken everything on passenger side on the floor apart and cannot figure out how water gets in. I would appreciate if anyone who had the same issue without a sunroof and figured out where the water gets in, please let me know. I should add, not currently running A/C, so that can't be the issue either. It's always after raining hard when my floor gets wet. I pull out as much water with our small bissell carpet cleaner that helps a lot.

My daughter has the 2017 HRV and she has suddenly developed the same problem of finding a large amount of water on the passenger side floor. And when I say a large amount, it was about a quart or more that I vacuumed up. Based on Youtube video, I opened the moon roof and cleaned the area near the vent tube opening and blew out the vent tube. But I really don't think that much water could come from the rubber seals leaking water into the moon roof rack. More likely is that the drain tube located under the plastic cowling that lies below the windshield wipers is clogged and letting water enter the cabin by way of the clean air/cabin filer area. Due to the amount of water that comes in, I think it has to be off the windshield and not draining correctly. But that fix exceeds my capabilities so we will ask a mechanic to fix.
CaboJim,

I stumbled onto your post from 2020 regarding the leak in your daughter's 2017 HR-V, and I agree with your reasoning regarding the source of the leak. I have a 2018 HR-V that recently had a sizable quantity of water pooled on the driver's side front floor; the problem surfaced after a rainstorm.

The drains for the sunroof are unclogged and work as they were designed. Similarly, aside from the AC not having been used, when the AC is used, condensate (i.e. water) drains properly under the car. Thus, like you, I have deduced that "my" leak is due to some type of drain under the windshield cowl is plugged. The fact that my puddle occurred on the driver's side is likely due to the plug on that side is the one plugged.

I realize it has been awhile, but did you get to the bottom of your problem and what was done to correct the situation?

Thank you,
JustJim

That is correct. Clogged sunroof drains as well as a clogged A/C drain can cause that problem.
I have a 2016 LX so no sunroof and the problem started last spring before the A/C was used. Lots of water on the driver's side soaking the carpet. So it had to be a leak in the windshield cowl, the firewall or the windshield seal. Replacing the windshield along with a new seal seems to have fixed the problem for me. Many washings and heavy rain and no more leaks.
I have a honda hrv 2022 and i just noticed that it happend to me couple of times. I never leave my windows or sun roof open. I plan on taking it to the dealer since i have a 7 year warrenty

Same thing happened with my mom’s 2016 HRV twice this week. Water in both side on the floorboard. Opened sunroof and both front sunroof drains were clogged, cleaned them out, hopefully that’s the fix.

after is top photo, before is bottom. You can see the hole cleared out in the first photo. Take a look and see if this is the same on your vehicle.

I have a 2016 HR-V as well. I ended up with a $4,200.00 repair bill for the water damage inside my car. It was leaking form the rear hatch area. They think it was sealant that shrunk or cracked, allowing water in. I opened a case with Honda Corporate. That can be done online or by calling them. Unfortunately, my request for a Goodwill Reimbursement was declined due to being outside the warranty timeframe and no active campaigns for a fix.

Although it is a known issue for the 2016-2021 generation of this model, they said there are not enough cases to start a campaign with a possible fix/reimbursement. How disappointing and frustrating! They told me if enough people file cases, it may be addressed at some point. So, start a case, if possible. Then it is on file with them and they have your information if they ever reimburse for damages.

Good luck!

Hi. I have a 2016 HRV which I bought brand new from a Honda dealership. This year, after it rains, there is a large water puddle inside the car on the front passenger floor bed. This has happened quite a few times. I did not leave the window open if anyone was wondering. I took it to the Honda dealer service and they basically said it was a clogged air conditioner. They apparently fixed and I paid $150 for the diagnostic and repair out of pocket though I was still in my 3 year warranty. 3 weeks later, after it rained, there is still a puddle in my car. The interior now has a foul odor due to the water damage. I take the car back to the same Honda service. It’s been over a week and a half and they never contact me to update me. I call and the mechanic says he still can’t find the source. My warranty expires in a few days.
Has anyone had this issue with the leak? I called Honda and made complaint. I don’t know what to do at this point. Please help.
